I have noticed a slight clunking sound in my tranny/drive train when I accelerate and even when I decelerate. there is a small delay in there too (not tight). should I be worried? ...is there any precautions I can take to prevent damage in the future?

To me it sounds like bad u-joints. I would inspect the u-joints by removing the driveshaft. If the u-joints do not show any sign of wear lube them up. Then I would drain the rear diff. Then remove the rear diff cover. Check the rear diff for excess play as you may have worn bearings in the rear diff. Also check the ring gear for excessive wear.

But most likely the problem is going to be your u-joints being bad.
