If a guy wanted to, could he change the gear ratio (currently 3.73) on my truck to say, 3.53? lower?

whats involved?
just the ring gear?
will it match up to the 35 spline axles?
will i need to change the front pig also?

its a daily driver and I'm trying to get a few MPG's out of the deal.

just thinkin out loud.

Whenever you change gear ratios you need to change the ratio in the front and the rear together, at the same time.
That requires a new ring gear and a new pinion gear in each differential.
Depending on the ratio, it may also require a new differential carrier.

Since you are rebuilding both differentials to change a gear ratio, the return you would get on fuel mileage certainly would not be worth the expense.

I figured it may be a long shot.

sounds like it would probably take too long for for the payback, and add the performance hit on top of that.

it doesn't sound like this would be worth the trouble.

may have to go under the hood to get a few more MPG's.
I'll keep lookin around.

we should start a poll for best mpg mods. It would be nice to see some of the comments / modifications some have made and the success rate / avg gains all in one place.
