2000 F250 4wd with the short bed 29 gallon tank. I've had the truck for about two months and I have only successfully filled the tank once. Here's what I mean.

I'll run it down till it says about 80-100 miles to empty, and less than 1/4 tank. The fillup will then be about 17 gallons. The pump just will not let me put more in. The needle will show full for about 10 miles and then I'm down to 3/4 of a tank within 50 miles.

To me that means i am not actually filling the tank, for some reason the pumps are getting auto shut off early because of back pressure from my tank (indeed i can hear the diesel filling up the filler neck).

I'm at a loss on this, has anyone seen this before? I tried searching the forums without success.

I'll add that ONE time I filled up at a station with a SUPER slow pump and got 22 gallons in over the course of about 10 minutes. That time it stayed full and didn't immediately drop to 3/4. I've tried filling on the slowest setting since then and can't make it work again.

Common. I would do the hutch mod while you are doing the harpoon.

those mods help alot to my understanding, but what happens is diesel is a foamy fuel, so it is basically foaming up into the fuel neck, usually what i do is wait till it kicks off, and wait a couple minutes and try again on the low setting, and keep cycling the pump on and off until i see fuel at the top.

Thanks everyone! I had been eying the hutch mod but wasn't sure if it would impact this particular issue. Appreciate all the help.

Many things will do what you are experiencing, and the Hutch mod should clear it. It's on my list, but not a biggy. Part of the problem may be the sending unit itself. Assuming I do my part and fill it up right, my gauge is pegged full for roughly 70 miles, and then the first quarter is gone by 140. I watch the gauge move, and it's disturbing at first. If I don't do my part and fill it up on level ground after taking my time to throw in additives, and only putting the set lock on the middle click, then I see different results. I'll be pegged for 20-30 miles and that first quarter tank will be gone well before I hit 90. Huge difference in results, the only change being level ground and my patience.

I think this is my first post to the forum so hope I don't screw it up. I've had my 2000 Powerstroke for a little over a year and had your problem until a station attendant in Oregon showed me to just hold the nozzle up close to the opening for the last bit after it shuts down with the auto shut off on the nozzle. Then just squeeze the trigger gently to get a very slow fill and back off when you see the foam. Then try it some more. We've been down the road all over the western states since then and always been able to get a full tank with not much more than 5 minutes of persuasion.
