Okay... here's the story... I pulled off gravel, and put the hammer down to throw the mud off my tires. There was a definite mechanical snap / crunch sound, and my turbo gauge dropped right off. NADA, nothing. Lost major power, and started blowing blue BIG TIME!! Drove another 50 km's, and never saw a twitch in my oil pressure gauge, or engine temp.

Now... first thought of course was piled up turbo, but, the blue I am blowing is obviously oil, as, my oil level dropped at least 6-8 litres in 50 km's. The question I have is, am I blowing oil through my turbo, or did my turbo go from lack of oil? If so... do I have a pooched cylinder or what? Is it possible that the turbo is screwed and dumping oil directly into the exhaust?

yes it is possible you blew the turbo apart but my biggest concern is why did you keep driving it? you obviously don't realize that if a diesel starts feeding off of it's lube oil it will run away

the best thing you can do to save these engines from catastropic failure is to shut it off when you suspect a serious problem

I know, and I realize that, but... where I work, shutting it down isn't always an option. I was constantly monitoring my gauges, and if anything seemed amiss, I would have powered 'er down. But, in my situation, I had to get it out. I know that the powerstroke will go into safe mode ( shut 'er down ) if I am too stupid to. I took a risk.

I appreciate your feedback, but, it still does not satisfactorily explain where my oil is going, or if the turbo crapping out it the root problem. All the so called tech's up here said it would be okay to limp my truck the 250 km's home for repair.... I agree with you that that is probably not a very good idea.

Basically, I know right pedal goes fast, left pedal slows down, and suspension..... but I am learning. ( thanks to help from you guys )

pull your downpipe connection off and look at the turbine to make sure it's still there, look for oil too, there shouldn't be any in the outlet

as for the 6.0 having a fail safe.........don't make me laugh :D. if you fill your cac up with oil from a blown turbo seal it'll eventually reach a point where the engine starts injesting it. nothing is going to shut it off

When my turbo oil seals (journal bearings) went out on my turbo, it would blow blue smoke from the oil. As Sinner mentions above, when I pulled off my downpipe, I had oily, sooty residue in there. My turbo was replaced and all is good. Get it checked before you have a runaway condition.
