Bad Injectors

Hi everyone,
I have owner my 2006 f250 6.0L for roughly 3 years and have poured much more money into it that I would like to admit. That being said Im invested in the truck and need it for work as Im a masonry contractor. Its been out for two weeks now as I waited for a local diesel mechanic to take a look. The news came in today, three failing injectors (1,3,8) and I knew this was worst case scenario. On my initial discussions he said if they were all on same side that he would suggest replacing all four which wouldve been around $2000. Since they are on both side I knew it wasnt ideal and on top of that he suggested replacing glow plugs and a couple of pigtails. His estimate was now $6000, which seems a bit steep considering the glow plugs are something that I would and could do. Just looking for advice as to what I should be looking at for replacing all 8 injectors, I was thinking $4000 would be the absolute max. I recently replaced tranny and I have a couple of other things I would need to do as well and not sure its worth it chasing my tail with this truck. Any and all input is appreciated. Thanks in advance. And for the record, I know a very little when it concerns these trucks, just trying to figure out where this price got so high.

If you have a clean place to pull the truck in and work, we can walk you through glow plugs and injectors. We are full-time RV’ing at the moment and had all eight injectors plus much more done for way less than that. I had to pay a (really great) shop to do the work because we aren’t at our home base currently.

You need Forscan and a laptop as well.

Injectors can be had for $200 each (4C3Z-9E527-BRM). Doing it yourself would cost around $2000 unless you were going to add in the injector harness.


Glow plugs (short ones) $11.50 each (4C3Z-12A342-AA):


2006 glow plug harnesses (5C3Z-12A690-A and 4C2Z-12A690-AB): Around $100 for both

The labor is what he's charging for. CAC pipes, turbo, a few harnesses all have to come off to get your valve covers off, and of course there's a mark up for the parts. I'm not very mechanically inclined and have changed injectors on a 6.0 about 3 times now. Last go around only took me about a full day and a half and I was going slow.

Also, I see you asked about changing all 8 instead of just the 3 that are bad now....I have changed my injectors 3 times because at first I only replaced 1 or 2. My opinion is whatever caused the 3 to fail, is going to eventually effect the other injectors, and since you have to go in to both sides you might as well do all 8, but I would also ensure you're getting adequate fuel pressure, and you're changing your fuel filters often.

This might help decipher your some of your estimate. I just had four glow plugs and one harness done with MC parts.

Labor $187.00
Said he could have charged me more for removing the valve cover, but cut me some slack...maybe because on the small fortune he has made off me over the years.:ROFLMAO:
He wont charge me the whole cost or extra labor for somethings, if he is already in there...if you know what I mean.

No way would I pay $4000 labor for that amount of work. It's not as difficult as it sounds. Two average work days and you could do it yourself.

As six liter teter said, you can get new injectors for $200 a pop. Injectors really aren't that hard to do. If you dont want to do it you can at least order the injectors yourself and save quite a bit based on his pricing.

I use a 12mm ratcheting wrench for the valve covers. Having a swivel adapter for a socket will help for one on the rear driver's side. Also a very small t35 setup for a few of the oil rail bolts on the passenger side. Also a long t40 or t45 to remove injectors....that one isn't mandatory but it helps.

Both diesel tech Ron and in the shop have good pointers (you can find them on YouTube)

LOL. There are usually plenty of people that can and do step up and contribute what is needed.

That said, I have seen close to a dozen 6.0L forums almost "die-off". Hate to see it, but many of those forums had active and EXTREMELY knowledgeable people that just got tired of the effort (and sometimes it can be a big effort), or they just got tired with the occasional guy that didn't listen very well, lol.

Very true about people not listening. I’m less than a year in on this particular forum. Seeing a pattern:

Engage Forscan. Crickets.

Use Motorcraft parts. Crickets+Amazon+Ebay

What’s your fuel pressure? Crickets

Map, Baro, EBP KOEO in psi? Crickets+Autozone gave me these codes+I put in a new turbo, injectors, and deleted the egr cooler man this is it it’s going to the junkyard

Are you using a tuner? Crickets+no just a Bullydog for reading codes (yeah ok)

The OP for this thread seems to have a good attitude and makes me have hope.

for the tools needed, I'd also add a torque wrench, the injector hold down bolts need to be 24-26 ft lbs. and I would recommend a long shank T45 to get the torque wrench in the right position

My apologies, Im a masonry contractor with my work truck down, I am scrambling to keep things moving along in my life right now. As you may have seen I personally thanked everyone for the assistance. Didnt know the “like” was so important to you, hopefully now you can rest. Again, Im very apprecitive of everyone for their input and expertise. I guess you can say Im entering a 6.0 hole as I have poured so much into this truck and didnt need this to happen during my peak busy season. Live ans learn I guess

We also all understand the need for a work truck. It is crippling when it isn’t there to keep the income flowing. Man, we understand.

OP - If you start to do your own work, you will quickly learn that part numbers sometimes can be a pain to get to.

Also, that you can waste a lot of money buying your own parts unless you know how to get the discount prices on the "real" OEM parts.
