Ok, I am lost on this one. here is the description of what keeps occurring.

The truck starts just fine and runs flawlessly, just like always. Then, out of nowhere the service engine light pops on and I have a terribly loud and rough idle and no power to speak of. Pull over, turn the truck off and then re-fire and the service light is off and the truck runs fine until it decides to do it again. This happened the first time about six weeks ago and never happened again, so i considered it a fluke until it started up again this week. It has happened five times this week.

I scanned the truck even though the service light didn't stay on. It has no stored codes, but has a list of DTC codes. I'm not sure what the DTC codes mean other than what the scanner book told me (which is that they are continuous.)

The codes are as follows:
P1395
P1396
P1397
P0380
P1141
P1748
P1536
P1464
P0231
P0220
P0475
P0232
P0460
P1316
P0282

The truck has 148k miles and is stock except for an S&B intake, 4" turbo back, and TS six position chip.

Any help at all would be great!! Thanks.

I would guess you have an issue with the IDM or injector wiring. Could be a UVC harness wiggling loose or a issue with the IDM. Normally when you have an issue with the UVC harness you'll only lose one injector so it will run like it's on 7 cylinders. A IDM issue will cause it to run real bad.

Would you say it's only losing one hole or does it barely run?

What sort of scanner are you using to check codes? Can you run KOEO and injector buzz tests?

I'd start with clearing codes and seeing which ones come back.

Sounds more like a IDM issue, but you should clear codes and get it to do it again and see what codes come back.

IDM is injector driver module. This is the module that is used to control the injectors electrically.

UVC stands for under valve cover harness, or UVCH. This is the harness that's under the valve covers that goes to the injectors and glow plugs. They're snapped in by a plastic tab that has a habit of working it's way loose, causing a poor connection and you'll start to develop a miss.

The IDM is located in the driver front fender well, tucked up behind the splash guard. The easiest way to get to it is to remove the drivers side splash guard. Don't get confused with the PCM, which is near the same area. The PCM is actually inside the cab next to the parking brake assembly.

See what codes you log and let us know.

Got it going!

Turns out it was the UVC that was the problem. Took the truck to Jason at Arizona Affordable Diesel. He and his team were very helpful and fairly priced. I was impressed with his honesty. (Just wanted to throw that in there because it is hard to find a GOOD diesel mechanic here in Tucson.)
