Recently bought an 03 F250 7.3 165k miles. bone stock. Upgraded the turbo, ebpv delete, 4 inch exhaust, and a PHP Hydra tuner. Has the VDH4 PCM. It was obvious there was a tuner installed on this previously. before the upgrades i was getting random trans issues (sticking in gears mostly.) mostly intermittent. after installing the truck wouldnt fire up. crank no start. removed the tuner, it fired right up. re installed it and it was fine. pulling out of the driveway it shut down, and hasnt run since. im getting no fuel pump, and my scanner wont register. but im getting glow plugs still. im feeling its a pcm. any guidance? diesel tech friend seems to think the pcm was on its way out from the prior shifting issues.

It sounds like when mine went out. Some things worked, some things didn't. The good news is, you can start with a clean stock tune - Run it for a bit to shake it down, then add the Hydra.

I had the shop do mine, I believe out the door it was around $600. Given you have a diesel tech friend, he might cut you a deal.

I would have a close look at the edge connector where the tuner connects to the PCM. Those solder pads can be thin and making a poor, intermittent, connection to the tuner which causes the PCM to be confused when it does.

The fix is pretty simple, those pads can be re-tinned with additional solder which "fattens up" the thickness of the connection (worth a a shot ;) )

Did you pull the chip back out again to see if it would start up? If you did pull it back out and still no start, you fried the PCM. More than likely the J3 port needs cleaned correctly, or as Ralph said the pads on the port have been worn down too far (usually someone that was too aggressive on cleaning the port). The pads on the port dont just wear down and like he also said, they can be retinned.
