so the local auto part store has a do it yourself a/c recharge kit that says works on most vehicles. just wondering if anyone has tried one of these kits? does it work, or is it worth taking it somewhere to get it recharged? getting warm here and a/c doesnt get too cold anymore. thanks

They work fine if you have a leak and just need to top off your R-12 or R-134a. Your A/C system is a closed loop, so if it isn't quite as cold as it used to be, the freon is escaping through some sort of leak. In that case, buy the kit with the dye in it to try to determine where it is escaping from. Make sure you don't overcharge your system.

How empty was your system? You well be better off going and have your system pulled to a vacuum to get the air out of the system then recharge it it well cool better. with air in the system it well not take a full charge.

They sell this stuff at a lot of stores where I live, its called red-tek 12a. They have recharge kits, dyes, and sealers for A/C systems...Never tried it so I can't say how good it works.
