I have a friend with a 97 7.3l and he would like to tune it up a little bit. It is a 97 7.3l, 4x4 auto with 180k on it. What i am looking to do for him is get a little bit of extra power, which he is hoping makes it smoke a little bit, and also i will be installing stacks. Im wondering what would be the cheapest way to a little bit of
power. As far as the stacks go i already know what i am gonna do so id like to find a good way to make some power with out killing the wallet and the transmission at the same time.

Goal: Be able to keep up with my dad's and my cummins. :hehe:

Start saving for a trans. I chiped mine and on a mild tow tune, I burnt up my trannie the first summer I went in the mountains.
And with stock injectors on my extreme tune I get more of a haze then smoke.

Make sure you get a good set of gauges first. That is how I knew my trannie was cooking. And I didn't get stranded on a hill with a 14,000 lb 5th wheel.

For just a moderate bump in power but nothing to drastic a chip will do good. But you should also do at least a down pipe as the stocker is smashed flat for firewall clearance. That an AFE intake and 4" exhaust will help it breath a lot better. You'll also want to put gauges in it as well. A chip with stock injectors isn't going to have him keeping up with any modified Cummins but he should hold his own year for year against stock Cummins. It will also be OK on the trans. If it's weak and about to go it may push it over the edge but it shouldn't take out a good tranny. Taking the next step up to injectors is going to require a new tranny though but will also yield a huge increase in power.

First replace the downpipe and intake. Then order a chip from Tony Wildman and get a set of gauges. Next get a set of DIY stage 1 injectors. You'll be looking at about 300HP.

what size down pipe and from where do i get one?

wildman i hear about him A LOT ON NEWENGLANDTURBODIESELPOWER.COM

i will look nto the chip and down pipe to o to the stacks. If i reuse the stock down pipe but bump up the rest of the exhaust to like a 4in. the to 5in. stacks will that hold ok with the chip. I will hook him up with a full set of isspro gauges once we decide on what to do, as all the trucks i build and or modify become equipped with the isspro brand gauges. i have used isspro for a while now and will not use anyone else.

Stock down pipe is a huge down fall as it is squashed flat to about 1" EGT will be way up there with modified fueling.

As mentioned above, definitely get rid of the stock downpipe. Just for the fun of it, I drove mine with the exhaust cut off at the stock downpipe. Then I drove it with the Tymar downpipe and full 5" exhaust. It made MUCH more power (and less noise) in the second configuration. Once you get the stock downpipe out you'll see why.

Thanks for the vote of confidence on ISSPRO gauges!
