Just got a 96 F-250 7.3L. Got a problem with it and I’m not sure what it is. There is hardly any soot coming out of the exhaust except for only hard pulls on the interstate. While I’m on the interstate sustaining 70-75mph I can feel the engine bay getting very hot and can feel it at my feet and legs through the cab. With that sustained speed my engine light comes on. And I have to pull over and let the truck sit.
I also have a slight ticking noise in the engine bay when I accelerate on the interstate. I also have hardly any turbo noise.

I just recently had the drivers side exhaust manifold replaced cause it had an exhaust leak. I’m wondering if it’s another exhaust leak causing these things or what it is. Someone put their sense into this?

Find a way to see what the check engine light code is... I know a 96 may or may not have an OBDII port but find that code...Do not rely on the dash guages. Do you know if the truck had a chip on at one point currently?

Any mods to the truck?
Affirm, has a hydra chip with 180/30 injectors, air system rebuilt turbo, rebuilt trans

A 96 will have an active OBD2 port under the dash. I would get the FORScan or FORScan Lite app and a suitable ELM-327 OBD adapter for whatever device you're using (smartphone, laptop, tablet, etc). You can get adapters that interface via bluetooth, wi-fi, and cable. I use an OBDLink MX+ with my iPhone 7. BASF makes an inexpensive one for Android use and there are other inexpensive options out there. With that you can read any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) and also read/record live data to see what's happening. Many folks (myself included) will also recommend physically removing the chip to take it out of the equation. Cheers!

By removing the chip you mean the hydra chip, or the port?

What condition is the radiator and fan in ?
radiator fins clean and not bent over ?
cooling fan should be roaring at the time that light comes on
Thermostat ever been replaced ?

You should have gauges for bigger injectors. It helps with troubleshooting and avoiding major engine damage. Check between the ac condenser and radiator for dirt, leaves, etc. If you do not know the history of the thermostat it is best to replace it. I highly suggest sticking with a Motorcraft thermostat. If you are in need of replacing the water pump I suggest installing a 96-97 water pump and thermostat. 94-95 water pumps are pretty hard to find right now
