89 7.3 IDI -- has difficulty starting (but turns over well).

History - Replaced the glow plug controller module on the back of the engine 2 years ago - ran fine till a few months ago.

Now when it starts the voltage gauge bounces all over the place and the wait to start light will blink on and off intermittently. But the engine seems to "run" just fine (does not stumble etc).

Voltage regulator was replaced a few weeks ago, seemed to clear up the problem, but only for 2 days and then it was back again.

The truck belongs to best friend who is in remote area of Alaska and no diagnostic tools are available outside of basic mechanics toolbox and multi-meter... shipping parts one by one to "try it, see if it works" is very costly both in time and money because of the remoteness. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks in advance -

Bump for some help?

Anyone else able to give some ideas here... I am thinking that it has to be a problem with his glow plug system but I have ZERO resources/history with these older pre-powerstrokes...

Thanks again

A couple glow plugs could be bad causing that. Once a couple go, for some reason on the 7.3 setup it will cycle like that. Test them with an ohm meter, should be less than 1 ohm when cold. If they are more than that, they are bad.

Only buy BERU/MOTORCRAFT others will swell and when you take them out, fall in the head.
