7.3 upgrades for towing

5728 Views 20 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  [email protected]
I’m new to the 7.3 my last truck was a 6.0 f450. I have recently bought a 2000 f250srw 6 speed, 3.73 diff and I am looking for advice for modifying for extra power towing. The truck is stock besides for muffler delete. I’ve already ordered all new brakes and filters but looking to spend about 1,500 to add some “safe” power to help with heavy loads. I mostly pull a skid steer and trailer that’s 10k-12k and a 4K boat. I was thinking gauges, tunes, turbo housing upgrade or could do injectors and housing not sure just don’t want to worry about egts when towing.

I would do the normal basic mods. Tuner, intake, exhaust, monitor.

There are lots of choices for exhaust, but if you live in the northern states, then go with stainless steel.

If you don't want to do the exhaust, then we have this option for a turbo upgrade.

Or this kit

I appreciate the advice but I have been doing a bit of research and from what all I’ve read most say stock exhaust and intake can support way more power than what I have or plan to make. I am interested in a tune regardless of which route I go but more interested in spending my money on parts that give a good gain in power and efficiency. If anyone has a truck setup with different housing, turbo, injectors, etc that tows often I would appreciate your input.

I would do:

160/30 injectors

Tuning

kc drop in turbo

Upgraded clutch

Gauges (EGT, boost, fuel pressure)

We do a few thousand of these particular trucks each year. The engine is an air pump, the easier it is to get the exhaust air out, the less the engine has to work.

He mentioned he has a $1500 budget. That's about $4500 worth of parts.

3" downpipe and an intake pair nicely together. You can't do one without the other. Get that stock pancake pipe out and lay it next to a 3" downpipe and you will be wondering what Ford was thinking.

It's a MUST!
for your set up you're going to get a million choices but most common, affordable and difference making for your specific truck....

First off: Guages... You want to monitor boost, EGT, You dont really need to worry about a trans cooler with a manual one of the benefits.
Turbo: You could easily swap in a wicked wheel 2 turbo wheel or a drop in wheel kit from kc turbo-wont hurt the truck and help a little with EGTs and boost and i mean A LITTLE but noticeable...
Tuning-Simply put dont run a rune without monitoring EGTs at minimum just not worth it. At that weight you're gonna be limited to the 50hp and below tunes without getting too hot though.

About 400 for an edge insight with the egt probe worth its weight in gold!
$2-400 for the turbo wheel
$275 for the php chip and dont waste money for custom tunes
*biggest IF is your clutch. If its new enough no need but tunes and towing will burn the oem up fast....
*I liked the 2008 mirror upgrade kit for about $280. Improved visability and helped a ton backing up and during traffic.
*I noticed the muffler delete and the AIS Intake kit made a low end difference esp when pulling a gooseneck up some hills we have...

If I had your truck that would be my list for a modified stock puller.

Absolutely on the mirrors. That's a good mod to bring up.

Hydra chip is now $349 shipped. Must have been awhile since you've looked at prices @JustinOOO9 Lol

Thanks for the input so far, I have actually bought a hydra off a buddy who wrecked his truck ,for $150 and am currently putting my new brakes on. Come to find out a caliper mount pin locked up but isn’t gonna hurt to have new rotors and pads on it. I have been looking at the 08 mirror mod definitely on my list. Do they plug up to the factory pigtail? So in the other mods one of my main questions looking thru these forums is that obviously the stock turbo does not flow enough air to keep egt at a reasonable level for towing with a tuner at any decent power level. Would turbo upgrades allow me to run more power while towing or no matter what I do it will be at low level towing? I will have a set of gauges ordered tonight before i run any tunes other than stock on the hydra.

1aauto has a kit. You choose YOUR TRUCK details and look at the mirror section and it has the upgrade kits for your truck with the wire-harness. Again do not choose the mirror for the 2008, choose your truck and look for the upgrade kit.

my truck is a 2000, does it have the pancake down pipe or was that just for obs

Might help if I look at the forum right.

You are correct. Ignore my comment above.
Would there be any benefit to changing compressor wheel or housing if I don’t plan on turbo or injector upgrade
Yes. Stock compressor wheels tend to surge easier, and you'll typically gain a few more lbs of boost with a billet KC wheel.

Would a wheel help reduce egts on just a tuned truck or would a housing and wheel be better

Typically a little bit, but there are other variables that affect egt's like boost and exhaust side leaks.

I don’t have any boost or exhaust leaks on my truck or yet to know what my egts will be towing with a tuner but will hopefully be setup next week maybe take some equipment for a ride
Don't forget upgrading the tranny cooler. Going to 6.0 style increases cooling capacity. Towed a bobcat for a friend for a couple of days and had overheating issues. Relatively inexpensive upgrade.
