Hey guys im new to diesel engines. Im lookin at a 93 f350 with the 7.3l IDI with a banks sidewinder turbo kit. I want to know how these IDI's are. I hear of the 7.3 powerstrokes being bulletproof and what not...are these engines the same. Im looking at one with about 380k that was rebuilt completely and hasd the turbo added about 150k ago. it starts good and runs hard, do these engines give much trouble?
The IDI's are great engines and will run forever if they are taken care of. Hell most of them run a long time even if they aren't taken care of. One of the main things you'll want to look for in a 7.3 IDI is cavitation. Do a search on 7.3 IDI cavitation as there are some good articles on what it is and how to prevent it. IDI's are really simple and inexpensive to work on too.
the idi's i think are better than the actual stroke injectors and glow plugs easy to get to without pulling valve covers and no chips or computers to mess with, so when that emp goes off and every car and truck die guess what we still rolling, also need more power turn up your fuel open your exhaust, put high flow air breather with some kind of inner cooler lots cheeper than a chip and sheer raw power! and btw all these guys rolling coal or making blackouts cause all the black smoke, thats all unburned fuel dummies, extremely inefficient and hard on the engine the faster the exhaust goes clear the mor power to the ground and its. not all that cool especially when the back your truck is covered in a black film of stinking unburnt diesel and will track on everything. any way love my idi 89 auto ç6 with gearvender od awsome! and 94 last Gen idi before the "powerstroke" w zf5 manual transmission both ex cab 4x4! i love em!
