Pilot bearing or worn gear teeth :dunno:

As far as a tranny swap to an auto, it's a pain in the a$$.
I,ve done it on a couple 70's muscle cars and I'd say only do it if your wantin a project otherwise sell the truck and buy one with an auto. :thumb:

well i kinda have been having trouble with the clutch but would that allow the stick to go to far and be in a gear when the stick is in nuetral

hmm... does it pop out of gear. If it is only problems going into gear I would think maybe it is just the wear pads on the shift forks...

Converting from manual to auto shouldn't be too hard. Another member here had a post about converting his... I'll try to find it..

That trans is pretty easy the take out, could take to a shop so they could have a look see, and check those cluch components out.:thumb:

NO IT DOSENT POP OUT OF GEAR IM JUST WORRIED ABOUT THE STICK ITSELF TRAVELING TO FAR AND THEN HOW WHEN ITS IN FOURTH AND IT WILL ACT LIKE ITS IN NUETRAL AND IF YOU PULL ON THE STICK MORE YOU CAN START TO FEEL THE GRIND LIKE TRYING TO STICK IT IN GEAR WITHOUT THE CLUTCH

YOu said you were having problems with your clutch.

Could it be maybe that the clutch isn't dis engaging whenever you push the pedal in, and vice versa?

I was going to ask you if the shift lever itself was real sloppy in the top cover or if it was tight, right up until you said this. I've seen shift levers so worn they could hardly be shifted, felt like you were everywhere except where you should be. Bent, worn, or broken shift forks will cause these kinds of problems too. Any metal in the trans fluid or have you checked yet.

NO HAVENT CHECKED THE FLUID BUT SOMEBODY TOLD ME THAT WHERE THE SHIFT BALL ON THE END OF THE STICK GOES INTO THAT CUP THERE IS SUPPOSE TO BE LIKE A PLASTIC OR WHATEVER IN THERE TO TAKE UP SLOP WELL THERE SNT ANYTHING THERE AND I UNSURE IF THERE IS ANYTHING NEEDED TO BE IN THERE..... YOU THINK I COULD BE ABLE TO TELL ANYTHING BY PULLING THE PTO PLAT ON THE SIDE AND LOOKING INSIDE IM ALMOST AFRAID TO DO THAT IN FEAR OF SOMETHING BAD

I don't know how the shift lever is set up on these trucks but we can find out. If my shift lever was real loose I wouldn't go ripping into my tranny just yet.

I've seen them get so sloppy you could move them several inches before they felt like they contacted anything and that kind of slop will cause problems. Actually there are several things that can cause these issues but shift lever and shift forks is right at the top of the list. Try looking up some info on your tranny here

This is a little newer but they should be pretty much the same for the most part, at least for getting a DX anyway.

most likely it is the lever, fork or a shift rail problem, I would give that lever a careful looking over. Did this problem just happen all at once or has it been steadily getting worse?

There is suppose to be two plastic bushings in that cup. Did you take the shifter out of that cup? Those plastic things are what the shift lever pivots on.
