hey im a student in a diesel program working on an 08 f350 6.4 bone stock... guy brought it in just bought it and it was throwing the codes p0284 & p0308 and was clearly misfiring, did a balance test and cyl 8 was not contributing, so i replaced the injector and there was no change... i realize it could be a burnt valve or ring but i was wondering how i could further trouble shoot the problem what i should test where i should start and what i should look for
okay so i did a relative compression test using ford IDS and found that cylinder #8 had 9% lower compression than the rest so i pulled the valve cover back off, put cyl 8 on the compression stroke and used a smoke maching to fill the cyl with smoke through the glow plug hole... when smoke came out of the crank case i then concluded that the loss in compression is either a worn cyl/rings or a cracked piston
tomorrow i start the cab removal and and repair ill let yall know how it turns out
Most likely a cracked piston due to the injector failing... Most of the time an injector comes apart or hangs open it will crack or melt a piston. I hope for your customers sake that the block is in good shape.
Btw... Pics of the carnage are always welcome. And I would replace the rocker arms, lifters, and push rods while you have the heads off and stud if the customer has the cash or is going to keep the truck.
