I have a 2000 7.3, and really like it for work around the farm/ranch. It is an automatic,4x4, and I think on my last road trip I checked the mileage was right at 17MPG. My son is currantly looking at a 2005 6.0, automatic, 4x4. What kind of fuel mileage can he expect out of it? IF driven comparably, will it get in the area my 7.3 does? Also, with the year being a 2005, is there documented problems he should be looking at or expect to address in the future, if he buys this truck?

i have a 06 psd f-250 i get about 23 on the interstate and 17 to 19 in town if you dont allready try anding diesel kleen it in a gray bootel it helps with fuel milge and for winter use the diesel kleen in the white bootel

I see all kinds of 6.0 mileage in the high teens to right around 20, but I have seen few claim to get into the low 20's too much. It's just like any engine though, same engine but fuel mileage can be low, normal and high.

I would say you could go either way for fuel mileage. That's great mileage for any PSD! I have a tough time keeping my foot out of it and I am only around 15 when I do. Otherwise, it is closer to 13. I love my truck and didn't buy it for fuel mileage. Some things to look out for with a 2005... EGR cooler/Oil cooler failures, Head gasket failures, HPOP quick disconnect fitting, death wobble in the front end (shaking), oil leaks (what diesel doesn't), what else am I forgetting?

Absolutely agree!! I have spent years on multiple forums reading up on the 6.0L and fuel economy. On highway driving w/ a tail wind, you may get 20 to 21 unloaded. I am averaging 17 now, w/ very little stop&go / short trip driving. Best I have done is 21 - again w/ a good tail wind. I use fuel additives, keep filters changed, keep EGR valve clean, have the most recent flash update on the control programs, etc. I also have done a few mods like the power elbow that have been claimed to help mpg (if they do, it is few tenths - which I will gladlly take!). Tire size makes a difference. I have 20's, but would recommend 17's.

Be sure to ONLY pay attention to hand calculated results - the electronic readings can be way off.

One thing I have not researched - the difference between manual and auto transmissions and how much better fuel economy is w/ the manual. Some of the 20+ mpg results may be w/ manual tranny's.

Some folks w/ tuners have claimed in the 23 range, but very few! I have never seen a spreadsheet or graph from someone who claims 20+ for anything more than a rare occasion.

Solid trucks should average around 16 mpg w/ 18-20 on the highway.

The 2005 is a good truck but they have a history of problems w/ the HPOP (high pressure oil pump) STC (snap to connect) fitting. Find a truck and then get the VIN number so you can get an OASIS report (this is the Ford repair history from their database). Also look for flash upgrades after 4th Qtr 2007. If you are buying from a dealership - negotiate for a new EGR valve, HPOP STC bracket installation, and the newest flash.

Boost tube's blowing off, up pipes leaking, A/C vacuum hose leaking.

I just did my mileage check, Im right around -3
perfect! hahaha.

with my 7.3 i get 13+ around town (probly could get more if i drove nicer) but i throw probly 10 bucks out the pipe when i coal haha!

I havent calced it sincce intake, tuner, and exhaust but it should be more than 20 highway miles.... stock igot around 17-19 i think it was.

Mine does not have any oil leaks. I have never seen a drip underneath any of the 3 that I have owned.

Yeah my overheads on my Dodges would get further off the harder I drove. If I drove very conservative my mpg would read terrific, about a half dozen times I saw over 24.5 and hand calculated was just a couple tenths under that. It was a 5 speed, and in Cummins world a lot of the manuals traditionally get better overall mpg's. I believe it, seeing how I have a manual now with the same style of driving I get about 16...but I no longer use my truck for work everyday as I have a van now and the truck is only needed for large loads and hauling materials, as well as wherever I go when I'm not working. I have only taken one decent highway trip with it and I got just a hair under 20 at 65. I'm confident I get 20 to maybe 21 if I'm around 55....but still, same exact year and motor and that's up to 4+ less than my manual.

I see about 11-12 around town and the one trip I took while not towing doing 70mph I got 17mpg. Towing a 12' tall 13k# race car trailer I get 9.4.
