2016 Sickening Exhaust Smell

Had to have the def heater replaced, they also did the tank. Afterwards, the sensor kept alerting so I went to put def in it and it was pretty low, but the filler tube seemed stuck, had to trickle the def to fill it and it took ~4.5 gallons to fill. Further down the road, we had a couple of hard freezes and I was off the road for some time, except for a few < 30 mile runs. So the truck has been sitting a lot lately. Now I get back in it after the last freeze and just sitting and running, the exhaust has whisps of white smoke. I run it into town and back and its registering < 10 mpg (which isn't abnormal towing our RV ~19k). However, after several days of back and forth to town ~25 miles, the exhaust is nearly sickening maybe could be described as "sweet." Then I noticed that the secondary coolant reservoir is pretty low. I've read that this could be a symptom of an issue with the def system, but I've also read head gasket or manifold gasket. Sadly, I need to move our RV (we full-time) because a tree service is coming in to remove trees near us and its ridiculously hard to get them on the schedule, so it has to be today/tomorrow. I am no mechanic, by any stretch. Not sure what to do??

Hard to tell, the 9th injector could be stuck open or it could be coolant.

I guess I lean towards the injector since its using DEF and not losing coolant.
Do you have any codes? Also do you have a monitor to see if its trying to regen?

As for what to do, move the trailer.
Then call the shop that did the work and have them check it.

Coolant in the degas I guess its called is low. The plastic one up top. Sorry, no mechanic here. The last code it threw was the one prior to the def heater fail, but not really a code, just the warning that it would go to limp mode.

No monitor for regen, but I've seen it say it was cleaning the def filter a couple of times, nearly back to back.
To figure any of this out you're going to have to either A.) find a way to get codes (because I'm fairly certain the system is trying to tell us something) or B.) take it somewhere that can get you said codes.

agreed we need a monitor, it could many things.
None the less I would still use it to move the trailer.

Get forscan for your computer. Search for the thread on enabling the dpf screen. Then you can always tell when it's ready to regen or in progress as you see the % dropping.

If you're not inclined, dealer or shop can do it for you.

I'll get a read from the dealer. What I was concerned about was a blown head gasket. Does the coolant being low in that upper container indicate anything related to head/manifold gasket issues? Where does that fluid get used? The mechanic says that it's separate from the main, which makes sense, since there is the pink/orange in the main radiator, lol, and that upper appears to be the old yellow/green stuff.

This link has diagrams for both cooling systems. Check it out!
