Hey guys, so like 3 months ago my dad bought a new (to him) 2008 F350 6.4, Supercab long bed with a Reading utility bed GVWR 11,000lbs With the 6.4 PSD with 69k on the clock. well after 3 months it now has 72k. Anyway he LOVES the truck, everything about it (he's a general contractor so the body's great) except for the 10 miles per gallon part... We have been looking into DPF delete pipes. My question is do you need a tuner!? One of my fathers friends (who is an ASE certified Ford diesel mechanic) seems to think no, because if the PSI in the DPF never gets to the point of it needing to hit re-gen, then it just won't re-gen ever. Idk it seems to make sense because if you think about it places sell the pipe with the kit that includes a tuner because the tuner is where they make the money. They want to sell you a tuner, so they're going to say you need it so they can make $$$. IMO i don't think its necessary, but what the hell do i know right! It does make sense but i figured i'd ask you guys before we spend 185 bucks on a pipe and cant use it because we have no tune. Oh and i've heard of the extra soot clogging the cat???? idk help me out.

HELP US!!

Quick answer is yes you definitely need the tuner in order to either turn the exhaust sensors off or trick them into thinking it's running the way it's supposed too. Without the tuner the probes will get whacky readings and throw you into limp mode because the temps are off, hence the programming that comes with a tuner to rectify that. I'm sure someone with a bit more technical knowledge can shed better light as to what exactly occurs, but that's the quick answer to the question...

See I tend to agree with you on this. But my dad and his friend think other wise. (damn old guys haha) but really I think its like gear z box or something has a box that is just a dpf delete thing and it doesn't act as a tune to add power which is what my dad says he would like. (You know you're old when you don't want even 50 more horsepower)

Ok yeah, the gear box z thing is an alternative to a tuner although I haven't seen or read any reviews on it so I'd be careful before he buys. Technically it's still a "programmer" if you will and it'll cost him 300-400 I think anyways. In your original post I thought you were trying to take the DPF off without any type of program in place to tell the truck it wasn't there, but the gear box z will do that. I would go to the 6.4 sections further down the forum and search gear box z in the sub forums there just to see what people might say about it. Just cause it's cheaper doesn't mean it'll work better though so be careful, and I say this only because in the three years I've had my truck I have yet to come across someone running the gear box z platform. Of course I haven't dug around for it, but I would search in the 6.4 forums to see what people say...

DPF vehicles won't run without a tuner if you remove the DPF!

Tuner is required to delete the DPF.
