I spent most of Saturday tearing the truck down to do the oil cooler using diesel tech Ron's video he made for the process it went smooth besides one of the fuel lines for the passenger side head twisting and breaking. I have a replacement on the way to take care of that.

Before putting it back together I am planning on welding shut the EGR cooler with stainless freeze plugs and also upgrading both the turbo oil lines. Is there anything else should mess with in there? I have an '04 but later model so square EGR cooler.

Oh I also did a coolant flush with restore before doing the cooler and will be going to Rotella ELC after this is wrapped up.

You don't necessarily have to weld them if you get welsh plugs, or you can make a plate to replace the embossed gasket at the cooler to manifold connection. For me, I prefer the non-welded just in case my state ever gets to the point of checking diesel that is more than a visual.
