hello, I'm new to the deisel world, just bought a 2004 f250 sd. My question is, are there 2 fuel pumps. Before I turn the key to start the one under the rail runs for a bit then shuts off. After the truck starts I can hear it running again. I thought it would have a pump in the tank that should be the only one running at this point. Also the fuel milage on the first tank was not that good, second tank..worse, and it seems to have lost some power, no smoke,..fuel filters? thanks for helping a new guy.....

hey whats going on welcome to the forum, I would try changing out your fuel filter, And I would do an oil change if you havent done one yet. Try draining the fuel/water seperator. Also that "pump" sound you hear I think you are referring to the glow plugs warming up\? someone on here should be able to answer some more questions for you!

The only fuel pump is on the frame rail under the drivers seat. You might be hearing the vacuum pump under the hood? The factory fuel pump will time out if the engine is not running. That's perfectly normal. It's possible you got some crappy fuel. Unfortunately it's quite common these days. If you don't know when the fuel filters were changed then it's a very good idea to change them yourself (there are 2 and they come together in a kit). I have had filters last as little as 2K miles. I have an incab fuel pressure gauge and know what the pressure drop should be.

thanks for the response, i did do an air filter replacement, will do oil over the weekend, the pump noise is in fact the pump at the water seperator, should it be running while the truck is running?

yes it is running fuel through it, seperating water/dirt while the engine is runnng. its a lift pump.
