Pulling the HPOP for replacement, 10MM deep socket stuck to the bolt just enough to fall off the ratchet, then tumble "behind" the pump and down where it get it's drive from the camshaft (?)

My question is - how impossible will this be to retrieve with the engine, transmission, and cab still firmly attatched to the truck?

I understand leaving it there is obviously not an option, I just want to know how much i am goign to hate life tryign to retrieve it.

I think the socket is a ferrous metal, so i should be able to get it out with a magnet if that area isn't TOO deep...

wonder what will go wrong with this thing next...

You ned to drop the oil pan enough to get to it. You can do it by just raisingthe engine and not removinf it. But....the tranny and rear engine cover must be removed to get the pan out, plus theres a few bolts on the passenger side that are a pain with the tranny cooler lines in the way. If its not in the oil pan then the bed plat(the next thing in there) will need removal also. Hopefully it didnt get stuck in there somewhere, and a magnet is almost impossible due to the ammount of other metal components in that area you end up sticking to everything but the socket.
Hope it helps and good luck my man!

Finally got the time to get the rear cover off, and out falls the socket.

one thing i'll say, it would have been a lot easier, and hurt a lot less, with that socket available for use (has anyone at international ever heard of a deburring tool?)

reassembly can now commence.
