Check the fuel lines up front by the fuel bowl/filter housing for a a leak, check oil level and condition, check for high pressure oil leaks and also for fuel condition. Oil level and quality is a huge factor on HEUI trucks. I had one in the shop yesterday with the same symptoms and it had a slight leak from the fitting on one of the fuel lines- one in specific leaks often, the one that runs from head to head behind the fuel bowl.
Blue99 is also right, although IPR and ICP issues will usually cause the truck to run poorly but can also affect starting. IPR valves are usually pretty solid, Check the IPR wiring harness (back of HPOP, and towards the bottom), and the ICP harness will sometimes get covered in oil and will need to be cleaned or even replaced. That's an easy connector to find, but the IPR harness is tougher, uses te same connector as our injector harnesses though so you could pilfer it from one of those.
I appreciate the suggestions, but I don't know what the abbreviations are. If someone would take a minute to spell out what the problem might be it would be great. Don't want to trouble anyone too much, but just need a little direction here!!
I am no diesel mechanic, so take this with a grain of salt.
Your truck actuates the fuel injectors by hydraulic pressure, created by the HPOP (high pressure oil pump) and regulated by a injection pressure regulator (IPR) and measured by an injection control pressure (ICP) sensor.
Check for leaks around the high pressure tubing - if there are any, the system will need to purge air and re-pressurize the high pressure side before the injectors will open and the engine starts. I think you'd end up with a rough start too - not just slow to start.
Is there some kind of check-valve in the fuel line from the frame mounted fuel pump? I wonder if the fuel pressure is taking some time to build up before the HPOP.
The IPR ( Injection pressure regulator ) regulates the oil pressure that is going to the injectors, if its stuck Open or closed it will not properly regulate the oil pressure and cause hot and cold idle issues, also check the ICP sensor that is located on the drivers side head behind the Alternator. Unplug this sensor when you are cranking the truck over and see if it starts easier or not. If it does, replace the sensor.
