I'm new to this forum and have mainly just read other people posts to learn more about my 6.0 until now.
I was coming home from a camping trip this weekend towing my toyhauler that was about 11,000 lbs. and broke 2 teeth on my ring gear. My truck has quite a few mods on it, but they are mainly for towing durability. I was running a tow tune from innovative and was noticing some pretty rough shifts with the truck jumping forward while shifting. I never had this before and assume this caused some shock loading on my gears that led to the failure. I have already spoke to innovative and they have already sent me their AGG towing tune. Is there anything else I should be looking into changing so I don't break gears again? I only had about 18k miles on the gears. I was thinking maybe a wicked wheel would ease up surging if it was turbo related. If it was line pressure and shifting issue hopefully the new tune addresses it. Any help or input would be appreciated. I dont want to have to get towed and need new gears every 18k miles.

honestly I think your gears had an issue and weren't set up optimally
yes they lasted 18 k but they should be able to deal with what happened

ask whomever does the next set to analyze the wear pattern

also i agree the tow tune needed some help so if the new tune doesn't smooth it out I would try another tuners heavy tow Gearhead /Wildman

and good luck I know getting towed sucks specially when your towing

your gears should have lasted WAY longer than 18k. think of how many trucks there are out there that work their tails off for a few hundred thousand miles.

Thats what I was thinking. Unfortunately my truck is at the same gear shop for the repair that installed them. I doubt they will tell me if they did something wrong the first time. He said shock loading is what did it. I said I towed the same trailer 2k heavier from Sacramento through Arizona on worse hills with only 3.73 gears for 18 hours each way. The trip it broke on was 2 hours each way.

ask them for the old gears for analysis ( might scare them LOL)
and post some pics maybe someone can evaluate not that it will ever come to them fessing up anything but

I think they are wrong or like you stated "CYA"
shock loading from what you had going on is not catastrophic

i have seen broken gears that deserved to be broken
heck even my own I got side swiped doing 40 and did a 180 then smacked a curb that broke teeth from shock loading LOL

I just picked up the truck. It actually had 3 broken teeth on the ring gear. He said it was obvious that the gears had gotten pretty hot too. He recommended Redline shock proof gear oil. I have always ran Amsoil. He said they run the Redline in there dragster. Anyone have any experience with the Redline shock proof?

gear oil failure is so rare when u use good names
I do not know what to say about the heat issue he observed being caused by the amsoil
you said He did the gears 18 k ago ? didn't he do the last fill ?


on 08 rear cover would be a nice cheap upgrade and any good oil in the correct spec IMHO

but Red-line has a good rep so I wouldn't be afraid to try it

What differential is in this truck? Sterling? Dana? Banjo? Did you see the ring and pinion? Did it look like it had been hot? Guarantee you the pinion depth wasn't set right.

I did the last fill. After the 500 break in I put amsoil in it. I even changed it due to age since it was done.The heat observation was a surprise for me running the amsoil and a mag hytec cover.

i think the gears were set wrong and the heat was a result of friction
if there was even any heat issues ?? i kinda doubt it unless you saw anything

but hopefully they got it dialed in this time

I took pictures and will figure out how to put them up tomorrow. The gears looked great to me. Except the 3 broke teeth. 2 of the teeth were broke pretty deep. I'm no gear expert, but I didn't see the heat discoloration he spoke of. Hopefully it was a combo of gears set wrong and the bad tranny tune for the truck. The up and down shifts were very hard and never had that with any tune before. Thanks for the input.

It looks like it was on the heel of the gears. Here is a pic I found. View attachment 293266 if they still have it you could ask them to show you the gear contact pattern. It's supposed to look like the middle one. If it's any other way ask them to correct it so it doesn't happen again

I looked very closely at the gear when I picked up the truck. The polished shiny contact point matches the top contact out of your pictures. When I change the oil after break in should there be enough wear for me to see if they are set wrong again at that point? They are also telling me I need to put redline shockproof heavy in at that time to handle the heat and shock loading. I haven't been able to find anything on people using it in diesels for towing. I may do it just to be safer.

Most likely not have enough wear to show up. Pick up some gear marking compound and paint it on your gears and turn the drive shaft a few times and see what ya got. I have no clue about the gear lube. Sorry.

Something is not right here. We have an F-550 with Superchips that has pulled a 17,000 lb. excavator many many times. I have seen the same truck spin tires crossing railroad tracks and then chirp when hitting pavement. I saw the same driver stand on it, swing wide turning onto the highway and squall tires. Never a differential issue. (It IS in the shop as we speak for studs and gaskets. LOL) I have seen many diffs in my time. I agree, IMO it was not set up right.
