Hello everyone!

First. Post Ever!

I'm in the process of replacing my glow plugs, GPR, harness, and valve cover gaskets. I had one connector that was fried and thus needed to be replaced. The remaining connectors are all intact and seem to be functional.

I'm using DieselRX GP's.

The plug in question is the front driver side plug and after removing the factory tape I discovered what appears to be some sort of a ground shielding wire. Can this wire simply be re-wrapped about the replaced wires or can it be removed?

Also, does it matter if the new wires are slightly longer than the previous wires? I'm going to need a bit of room to solder and apply the heat shrink.

Additionally, it seems that one of the intake hoses is worn and should be replaced. Is the part below one that be purchased from an aftermarket supplier?

The hose still seals, as the tear is after the clamp, but I'd feel better replacing the part while it's all apart.

welcome, do not remove the shielding wire, i believe it is to prevent interference with electronics, just re-wrap it back like you found it and re-tape it with quality tape like you found it. FYI if one is failing the others will not be far behind, IMHO. Too much extra wire may eventually tend to break if bent too hard or get chaffed, just take your time and get it close to the same lenght if possible. As for the intake tube, I would check Tousley ford for the part before i went with aftermarket, It has worked well this long. just my .02.

Stay away from any glowplugs that aren't Motorcraft or International (manufactured by Berut). I hate paying more than I have to for OEM parts, but glow plugs are one thing that I will always replace with OEM. Any other brand is a disaster waiting to happen with swollen tips.

i agree, motorcraft can be had for around $12 a piece, i hate autozone but that is where i found mine in '2000 for just over $8 a piece. 5/16" hose slipped over the glow plug once it is broken loose will aid in removal.

The guys got you covered on the GP/wiring stuff. On the subject of the orange intake boot: They were always prone to ripping as yours did. The factory fix is a kit (F7TZ-9C681-AA) that has a very stout black hose, new crankcase breather adapter, hose. and bracket (along with all the hose clamps, bolts, etc. The routing of the black hose is slightly different, hence the need for the other stuff). It usually runs about $83 or so from Tousley ford Parts online (your local dealer will most likely ream you for it). There is an aftermarket hose available from IntakeHoses.com that is slightly less expensive (i myself prefer going with the factory setup). Cheers!

...I just ordered the Motorcraft GP's, air filter, fuel filter from Rockauto. Even with shipping it was less than going to O'Reillys Auto Parts.

One last question (I hope).

You are supposed to unplug the injectors (on both sides) and crank over the motor a couple of time to blow out the oil through the glow plug holes, right?

Is it okay to do a side at a time? I pulled the "easy" valve cover (driver's side) and have all the GP's removed (they were Motorcraft GP's) and was wanting to get it all buttoned back up before doing the the "hard" valve cover.

I think for glowplugs the passenger side is easiest. You don't even have to get the valve cover fully off which is a pia. You can slide it down out of the way enough to access the plugs. The rear bolts are most easily accessed from ubderneath

Are you replacing injectors as well as glowplugs, or just the gp's?
If all you're doing is the plug's, then there's no need to purge the cylinders. Oil should only enter the cylinder if the injector is removed.

For the orange boot there are one very well built at Riffraff diesel performance that its better than the OEM upgraded from ford IMHO

Just the glow plugs - there seemed to be quite a bit of oil around the GP before removal, and the oil did flow into hole vacated by the GP.

I wouldn't worry about purging the cylinders. Shouldn't be enough to affect startup.

Project complete.

Just thought I would bring closure to the thread.

Finished up the project last weekend, new glow plugs (I did install the Motorcraft units) valve cover gaskets, internal harness and one repaired valve cover connector on the drivers side (the front connector).

I did pull the alternator bracket on the passenger side to facilitate removal of the the valve cover. Additionally, (as I'm paranoid) I decided to purge the cylinders before installing the new glow plugs.

Today it was relatively cold for Southwest Missouri - 14° F. The truck started on the first try. So, I guess my project was a success!
