hey all, so I was driving my truck today, an 05 powerstroke xl f250, to pull one of my buddies out of a local mud pit he got himself stuck in. the entrance to the trails was partially blocked by brush so i dropped my truck in park and got out to move it out of the way, leaving my truck running with the defrosters on full because it had been raining. when i got back into the truck a message came up saying "check guages" and when i looked over the trans temp guage was over the red, but as i was looking at it i had dropped the truck in drive and as soon as it went into drive the temp went back to normal but i panicked and shut the truck off. i let it sit for a half hour and went to start it in neutral, temp shot up again. waited a little longer started it again and immediately dropped it in reverse and the temp stayed normal, drove it all the way home and not a thing happened, but as soon as i got home and put it in park the temp shot up again. if anyone could diagnose this problem or help in any way i would be so grateful, i need this truck for work and i cant have it acting up on me

First issue I've heard like this, do you have any other indication beside the factory gauge?

I'm going to venture its nothing more than the sender, or something in the electronics, as you don't see the issue when you are in gear and actively producing heat.

I wouldn't wait to get it looked at, when was the last time it was in for service.

I run an aftermarket transmission temp gauge, as the factory unit is little more than an idiot light. A lot of folks here watch it via their aftermarket monitors.

Was the tow/haul light flashing? If it was, then the sensor is bad. Mine done it a while back and it was the sensor. Mine didn't act like your though, the guage on the dash just fell to the bottom and the tow/haul light came on.

it was just the factory guage, i havent gotten pillar guages yet but i popped the hood and i could hear something hissing. but nope, no tow/haul light was on. it may just be something in the electronics but im not sure, drove it to work yesterday without any problems whatsoever so i dont really understand what happened when it overheated
