I bought a '02 f250 with 238k miles a few weeks back. Started good when looking at it. Drove it home about 3 hours and the next day it didn't want to start. I have driven it once since bringing it home. Oh yeh, this is my first diesel, but I have been wrenching on gassers for over 20 years. Just never messed with a diesel. I looked nearly two years to find a clean 7.3l I could afford.
List of things done and why:
- checked fuses
- replaced ICP - was leaking oil
- replaced IPR - cause I had one
- replaced CPS - cause it so common
- replaced EOT - had fault code for reading too high
- drained filter housing and cleaned
- verified fuel is filling filter housing
- verified GPR is working with DMM - around 10.5v and better when cranking
- verified voltage to glow plugs
- ohmed glow plugs - all .5 - .6
- ohmed injector solenoids - most were 2.6 , couple were 2.7-2.9
- pulled valve covers and inspected UVCH
- checked UVCH connectors - were tight (plus did the .50 repair for good measure)
- topped off HPOP reservoir - was low
- pulled GP's - all 8 looked near new
- had batteries tested and charged - in case my load tester was failing me
- cylinder leak down test (done dead cold cause it won't start!):
all done at top dead center on compression strokes:
......... off top of my head results ranged - 50%, 55%, 58%, 60%, 40%
......... - and had one at 80% (#8)
results sucked but it was completely at ambient temp. (besides it did run)
I am nearly at my wits end. I am just not sure where to head next. I thought I may install a fuel pressure gauge and see what that is. Anyone have any ideas of what (and how to) I can test next? :dunno:
