5J's Ok here is where I am. I've waited two months to get a firm estimate from PSE and decided to move on. My options are tackle it myself or find another shop. I called PSP and their quote was $8915 for a HG job. Wow!! That comes with a 12/12 warranty but WOW!! Now that does include the pulling the motor new push rods ICP IPR STC and lifters as well as a full gasket job and paint. So I'm pricing parts and will likely call PSE again tomorrow. So, I've started pricing heads. So I need opinions on heads. Do I go with UCF, Powermaxx, Ashville or KDD. Any opinions here are welcome. I'm also curious if there is a reason I shouldn't go with the O'Dawgs S3R intake? Also recommendations for good shops in or around Houston or Austin Texas.

Head Gaskets are blown by either overheating or excessive cylinder pressure.
Overheating will burn the sealer on the gaskets and they will eventually fail.
Excessive cylinder pressure Will Lift stock bolts and push through the gaskets.
If the pressure is enough it will push through the sealer even with studs and burn the sealer.
It may not Puke the first time it does but the damage is done.
Anything that will Increase cylinder pressure will increase the chance of Failure.
The 6.0 just Doesn't have enough bolts around the Holes

TooManyToys The International trucks with the HP Nav designed to don't really have the issue.

The heads crown in the center, which studs will not address. (Yeah, the bolting is poor for this). My theory (without facts) is the heads were not designed around the HP or the increase in temperatures that occur from higher pressure explosions. I think that is why Nav and Ford have stated no machining. I also think this design and manufacture has some issues with residual stress in the casting, which could be why some heads blow out in the center over and over. Or it's just that the combustion layer keeps getting thinner.

Just because heads have been machined for 100 years doesn't mean all heads can be machined. It may even be not all 6.0 heads due to production variability.

I thought this was interesting information from a repair shop( 411 Diesel ) that's been working on the 6.0s for 10 years. Even with already having a EGR delete I went ahead and had a program written to my SCT turner that would turn off the dash trouble light for the EGR but would maintain the stock hp levels. Also turns the fan on early which helps keep things cooler when towing. I really think my gaskets probably blew again towing when I was really working the engine with a tow tune running.
This being my second time for HG's even with studs I am playing it safe cause the replacement it's cheap to say the least.

411 Diesel Quote;

This brings us to the head gasket failures that plague the 6.0 Powerstroke. This issue is the most widely known failure and is the single issue that gives the 6.0 Powerstroke a bad name. We keep records of all repairs at 441 Diesel and after going through our records I can confidently say that we have found that most (75%) of the head gasket repairs we have done on this engine are related to 2 issues.

1. Programming Ė If you think that Ford left any room for more hp in their engine with the hard parts installed you are mistaken. The big 3 auto manufacturers are in a constant battle to have the most horsepower. What that means is that if they couldíve put 450 hp in the 6.0 they would have. Most programmers have the capability to add upwards of 120 hp to the 6.0. This means that the 230 hp that International built the engine to withstand is essentially expected to withstand double the power. If you want to add power to your 6.0 plan on installing ARP studs and o-ringed heads. Itís the only way to make it last.

2. Bad EGR cooler Ė In the pictures above you can see the amount of coolant an EGR cooler can pump into the intake. The piston of the engine is already pushing a lot of pressure through the exhaust valve ports so if you add a liquid to the mix you can expect a gasket failure.

I will say that the Ford head bolt design is inferior to every other engine out there and Iím not giving them a pass Iím just making the point that only 1/4 of our head gasket repairs are on stock engines with good EGR coolers. The 6.0 only has 10 big head bolts and they are torque-to-yield so they are known to stretch under extreme load. With that being said we have 10+ International trucks that we service and we have had 0 head gasket failures on these engines because they are 215-230 hp and they are maintained meticulously.

Update III

Finally got the truck back today. 5J wanted to know the price I paid for the HG job. My heads checked out ok for cracks so were surfaced before install. THe total came to $4500.00 which included a cooling system flush before tear down, 3 new Ford injectors, 8 new glow plugs and new oil cooler. Total labor $2,090 @ 95 a hour.

5J's What'd it cost you? The shop I've looked to builds high performance race Powerstrokes. I'm confident in their work but, just can't believe I've got to do it.

Update II

Ok it's been a week since I took my truck in as earlier posted. The shop called today and said the heads checked out fine and they would be getting them back today after they were surfaced. They told me the head gasket on right side was ok but the left side was bad between the two center cylinders. He also mentioned the APR studs were bottomed out in heads and they weren't suppose to be that tight. I was told by the first guy that did the job that he had the heads checked and surfaced. Who knows maybe he skipped that step since the one side blew. I don't think I ever pushed the truck bad enough to blow the head gasket in my mind running the SCT tunes. There said to be stock head bolt safe.

Hopefully from my earlier symptoms this might help someone in diagnosing there truck if there having similar symptoms as mine stated earlier in this post. Since this was the second time having this done I can only hope it never comes up again.

5J that price you got seems high for the job. Check around and also make sure it's a reputable shop.

5J's Well......I haven't watched the EOT/ECT for two reasons. I have the BPD oil to air cooler with the factory cooler deleted and understood it was not necessary to heavily monitor those temps beyond the factory gauges and I don't have the availibity to monitor those. Bit, Yes I've been told gaskets or a small head crack. [emoji43] I've not been given a hard quote but about $6500 for a gasket job and $8500 for full heads.

jjohnsonlta I think your in the same boat as me, bad head gaskets. My troubles would only happen towing fifth wheel and working the engine hard. Normal driving it was fine. Of course I had them done before with APR studs but that doesn't mean they can't go bad again.

Were your last results towing? What was your ect running at 17 psi. If you had really high coolant temps when it went to 17 psi then that would explain extra pressure as far as I know.

I expect the shop where there working on my truck should be calling me soon with a update on what they found as far as gaskets/heads. I will post the results.
