So instead of pulling the hub and taking ALL of the brake assembly apart, I made this bracket. All that cover does is hold a pin that keeps the brake shoes up against the cover and off the hub.
I'm just seeing this post, and I love your fix, but I'd add this thought. You need to put something in to seal off that hole as well, otherwise, a variety of contaminants are getting into places you don't want them. Even if you just wanted to put duct tape over the hole from inside and outside, you want to keep dust, rocks, and other things from getting inside that parking brake drum. This could even result in a bound up drum if you don't do it, but would certainly lead to premature failure.
