    Hi CrazySOb

I was reading thru some old 6.4 posts an noticed that you and a couple of the other members had alot of knowledge about these motors. I am currently building a 6.4 and was wondering if you might have some advise. Thru your conections do you know of a good machine shop near the Northeast that can work on these engines? We already had the truck running once after we built it the first time only to discover the block cracked at #5 stud on the drivers side into the lifter valley and started putting coolant in the oil. Found another block to work with but have discovered we do not have a local resource that has the tooling(deck plate) to bore the block. Any insight would be much appreciated.

    Thanks
    Brian Holbrook

P.S. - Have you heard of anybody using HardBloc to take care of this issue on a 6.4?

Yeah, he said he's going to call ahead to a machine shop and have them ready so we can get it done in a weekend and still get the heads checked and machined. That's about all we're going to have time for though, I do need it to drive during the week so all the prep has to be lined up and ready to go. Otherwise my wife will be without a car - she home schools our kids so it's not the end of the world but she doesn't like to be stranded unnecessarily. But at least we'll get a good look under the hood while doing that and can plan ahead if we see other problems looming.

I see you have River City Diesel tuning. Are they pretty easy to work with? I tried emailing them a couple months ago but they never got back to me. Would calling them help or are they pretty much done with EPA regs like everyone else seems to be?

And I could really use some pointers on how not to brick the X4 again. I think I just didn't wait long enough for the drivers to load on the computer before trying to update it, but it seems like the software should have not progressed to update if that were the case. It looked like it had recognized the device since it listed what was out of date on the tuner and what wasn't.

I'm doing studs for several reasons. 1. I bought the truck this year (after my last one was stolen and totaled) used with 105k on it & while it looks like it's been treated well, it has some indicators that it may have been worked hard. 2. My friend is a diesel/heavy equipment mechanic so we're going to pop the cab off & get underneath & look it over good, EGR delete, FASS Fuel, & I thought as long as it's off do a turbo back exhaust. He suggested to do the studs too since the cab is going to be off already. We're trading his labor for my veterinary work so I just have the cost of parts.

A meet up would be cool but I have WAY too much stuff going on this weekend to leave town, I might take you up on that another time though. Thank you for the offer, I appreciate it. [email protected] is my email address if that's easier for you than messaging through here. Northwoods Animal Hospital

I'm in Princeton, about 45 mins to an hour NW of Mpls. 15 minutes north of Elk River. That's my other problem, I need to get a DPF delete tune. Truck blew a coolant leak yesterday so it's in the shop getting that fixed and new tires today, I have all the stuff for a friend of mine that is a mechanic to do EGR delete, DPF delete, ARP studs and head gaskets, and FASS Fuel in a couple of weeks. I also need an outer tie rod and axle joint I guess from what the mechanic told me today. One thing after another.

I posted this on a thread you had commented on too but just in case you don't see that I thought I would message you directly. I came across this forum and saw you live in MN like I do and have the same SCT X4 tuner that I just bought. It was brand new and as soon as I hooked it up to a computer to do the normal updates it quit midway through and gave an error message, now I have to send it back to SCT to get reset. Never even hooked it up to the truck.

Do you like the tuner? Should I think about something different?

Unfortunately the only way to really diagnose (aside from having an edge monitor or a tuner that can read dtcs) a 6.4 or 6.0 is with the Ford IDS scan tool... It could be something as simple as a bad egt sensor or as serious as a trans starting to fail. Have you seen any smoke or to signal damage to the motor?

Hey just got your text... Thank you for your reply.

So far, all that I have experienced is power not being able to go over 30 or 40 miles per hour.. The Reduced Power Engine went on last night and has been sitting there all day for the fear of creating more problems.
I am going to check out some other source because for one, Ford dealership repair shop doesn't open till Monday here.

I have read some of these post and it sounds like I can probably do something to save money. My wife was hit by a DUI driver last April and trying to get on Soc. Sec. but in the mean time, I can't afford to pay these high cost.

    Please help.

I very rarely use cruise control unless I am on a long trip and its flat so I don't know much about that. I need to replace the abs sensor though because my cruise doesn't always work. As far as what else should you do, get yourself a spare set of belt tensioners and belts. They are prone to going bad on these trucks, and the salt during the winter doesn't help one bit. Either way, you seem like you are getting the truck set up how you want. Get used to the sounds and rattles and enjoy the drive. Your truck will tell you when something is wrong. You just need to know whats normal and what isn't normal.
