I'm taking an 05 in on Monday for a mechanic at one of the better Ford dealers in my area to ride along. I just bought the truck for my wife and daughter to pull horses to shows and we pulled the Oasis after the fact unfortunately but, the purchase dealership offered up an all-inclusive warranty for surety. I see several issues typical of a 6.0 and would like some ideas of what to tell the mechanic to try and get all issues taken care of on the warranty (head gaskets, coolers, etc.). What angle should I approach, de-gas bottle, etc.? I don't want anything dishonest on my part or the mechanic but I do want my family to be confident on the road that the truck will hold up for them, granted nothing is certain. Any ideas?

3 biggest problems on 6.0's is the EGR system, Head Gaskets (typically due to failed head bolts) and the injectors.

Delete the ERG system (aftermarket and check your state laws that they dont inspect emmissions on diesels first - see the DIY write up here on the forum under 6.0 Mod Help). See if the mechanic will install ARP studs in place of the factory head bolts for you as a preventative measure - will cost you if the head bolts (factory torque to yield bolts - one time use and they stretch over time - hence why the head gaskets fail) had not actually failed yet but there is enough documented evidence to suggest that the preventative measure is well afforded and recommended.

How many miles are on the truck?

I have an '03 that has been run hard since the day it was new - took 199,000 miles for the factory head gaskets/bolts to fail and I have only had 3 injectors replaced since new. This is NOT typical. Keep the oil changed with synthetic. Keep her maintained.

I love my 6.0 - awesome truck that works very hard, driven very hard, daily driven. Even got rear ended by a dump truck at 60mph! Wasnt totaled, I walked away, had truck fixed and still driving her! Their great trucks!

Just turned over 100k mls. I'm hoping that the mechanic will work with me and I can get the gaskets ordered under warranty and I'll offer up the studs of course. I had a 7.3 that I really enjoyed but sold out of the business I had and didn't need it any longer. Now that the daughter has taken up horses I thought it best that we try to get something that would hold up better than a gasser. The thing powered down on me last week out of nowhere, idled down slower and slower until it died, no sputter, nothing. We let it set a while and added more fuel thinking perhaps we had some water or something going on and the weather has been cool here for a few days, fired right up. Rough idle for a few minutes, ran it a little harder than usual for a mile or so and then drove it ~ 40 mls with no problems. Hasn't acted up since.
