I think that area is where the 4x4 selector is located on the equipped models. May be some rough-in wiring, etc. behind the panel at this area? Googling "behind dash' along with your year & model produces some info which may be helpful to you.

Mine was an 02 2 WD and there was nothing. I actually mounted my XM Receiver screen in that location back when they were a stand-alone unit.

Not trying to be smart### here, but is there a panel below the steering wheel? If so, pull that and look up in there. Use a mirror and flashlight, if necessary.

I'm guessing you want to mount something there? If so, you'll want to KNOW what's there before you drill so can move anything in the way.

Just my thoughts.

I have a 4 WD King Ranch and it has the 4 WD switch there. The little recess below where you're pointing is where the OEM tow controller would go, and my 4 upfitter switches are installed to the left of the controller. If I took all that out, there'd be nothing back there. Not sure if that is the case for you though.
