Exhaust Brake Ambient Air Temperature

Does anyone know what the ambient air temperature is that disables the engagement/use of the engine brake feature?

Tried using it this morning and it was -21*C or about -6*F with windchill and it wouldn’t work. Let my truck sit in a heated shop for about 30 minutes and it worked no problem.

Mine works all winter. Even below 0*F. Maybe it wont work until EOT/ECT at a certain temp?

I think it was just a fluke that it didn’t work today. EOT/ECT was 150/154 respectively. I even restarted my truck and it still wouldn’t engage until it sat for 30 minutes in the shop. No codes were thrown either.

I found that when it was in the single digits, I wouldn’t turn the exhaust brake on until the cab was pretty warmed up. Otherwise the exhaust brake light would flash and not turn on. I think it was the relay in the dash being too cold because once the dash was warmed up some it would turn on fine.

Not a fluke/one off. Wouldn’t work this morning either. Local dealership has a call into Hotline to find out the exact temperature that it becomes disabled. Guess I’ll find out in a couple days as they’re closed for Thanksgiving.

I totally forgot to check yesterday morning, however i did this morning.

Ambient temp was 29 degrees. EOT/ECT 30 degrees

Started truck, waited 2-3 seconds for dash to clear, and hit the button. It came right on. Waited 30 seconds or so, headed down the road, and it was definitely working.

Maybe 30 degrees isnt cold enough

I just went to the dealership as they have a 2018 Platinum F350 in their used lot that’s speced the same as mine. Grabbed a salesman and the keys, fired it up, and the exhaust brake turned on, no hesitation, no problem. If a used truck in a crappy economy that’s sat on the lot for weeks/months and hasn’t been moved isn’t the best test subject, I don’t know what is.

I put my exhaust brake onto “on.” I’ve never put it in “auto.”
