Loose axle shaft?

Guys I have a 2017 f350 drw with only 39k miles. When turning left, I notice I have the front end/gas pedal rattle that seems somewhat commons on these newer trucks. I noticed that the passenger side axle has a significant amount of play up and down and side to side. Much more so than the driver side. Could this be a bad bearing/hub assembly? It looks like there are no bearings inside the diff axle tube. Is the hub going bad? Only ask before dropping 400 bucks on a new one.

These trucks use the boss standard DANA 60 front end. Been using it since like 1972.

The bearings are a sealed unit and can't be serviced. I find it very very hard to believe that your bearings are shot on that new of a truck but maybe you have a million miles on them. Its most likely your ball joints that are blown out. FORD is notorious for crappy ball joints, this will give you play that you describe.

Pick yourself up a good set of MOOG serviceable ball joints (although lately I have been hearing MOOG is no longer the good stuff, research as I think there are better ball joint sets out there now).

For the procedure, you can use this as a rough guideline as I don't think anything has changed since 1999 for the DANA 60 front end on our trucks.

You may need a special seal tool which OTC makes and sells on amazon. I did this years ago on my 2004 diesel and it was a pain but saved a TON of money doing it myself.

Pro tip for ya - Yank the knuckles off and take the whole works to a heavy truck service shop and have them press out and in the new ball joints. They may hook you up with a good deal on the ball joints too. They'll have the monster hydraulic press that is required to push these beasts out and in rather that struggling with those over the counter rental tools that are garbage.

Other than that its pretty straight forward, might as well slap on a new set of powerstop rotors and pads along with new front shocks and sway bar bushings too. If the truck has over 200k I would seriously recommend you rebuild the front axle u joints too.

Thanks for the response, ball joint is next im afraid. That would explain the rattling feeling.

The strange thing that directed me to suspect the hub is that when turning left, i.e. putting a "load" on the right side front wheel, I got an low audible howling noise. That didnt happen when turning right. However after changing the whole hub out I still have the exactly same howling noise when turning left.

the 05 up dana super 60 uses a different tool than the 04 and that vacuum seal is pretty sensitive to how you set it in the knuckle C and on the shaft
it is a unitized seal and spins inside itself

some play on the axle shaft is normal the passenger side axle shaft will appear to have more play because it is longer

quick peek on extreme diesels website and seems like peeps are still slapping in MOOG.

They also offer a set of Dynatracs, which are fully rebuildable. These come with a hefty price tag of $650 though!!!!!!

Personally, I'd rock the MOOG from the Orielly's and keep the receipt in the glove box, lifetime warranty then and cheap.

we are talking unit bearing s correct ?
Dynatrac for a unit bearing conversion is south of 2000.00 irc

i would use Timken or buy from 1A auto they have killer warranties on other off brands if money is an issue

but before i replaced 39,000 mile unit bearing I would closley inspect it first

ah I missed the Segway LOL

well I prefer Dana Spicer but only because I know what service life to expect and this is a pain in the butt of a job IMO ( and I suck and returning stuff for a lifetime warranty)

39k would be pretty early for a BJ fail but it does happen
