Fuel filter leak

Just got home and smelled diesel fuel. Got out and sure enough it was leaking. Started it up and this is what I saw...looks like a pin hole in the top of the fuel filter. No check engine light or low fuel pressure warning. Has anyone seen this before?

Good thing you smelled it or it could have been real bad if it started on fire.
Hydro likes this.

The service guy at my local dealer mentioned that the upper fuel filter had a tendency to do exactly this. "Pinhole in the top center" were his exact words. I think he said it usually happened at around 20k miles on the filter. I typically change my fuel filters every 10k, but I haven't hit that on this truck yet. How many miles since your last filter change?

He told me to always carry a spare fuel filter, because it's not IF it's WHEN. I should probably get that spare filter soon...

Thanks for the post. I imagine you're not the only one experiencing this, but I'm guessing a lot of people don't know about the timebomb under their hood. I'm glad it wasn't a disaster in your case!

Right now the truck has just under 28k. I changed them at 15k, so that puts 13k on the filters. Yes I’m lucky nothing bad happened, just shocked no light came on.

Unbelievable........ You would think this would be fixed permanently for liability reasons.

I picked up an HS Motorsports Fuel Filter Conversion Kit which eliminates the plastic filter housing and replaces it with a nice billet housing and it uses generic filters.

What’s it look like in the truck? Worried about warranty?

I havenít installed it yet as it was a struggle to get one in Canada. None of the stocking dealers had one. I have unboxed it and it looks to be another high quality piece from HSM. Iíll probably install it when I change my fuel filters in about 4500 miles. Only crappy thing is Ford only sells the filters as a kit that includes both the fuel conditioner module filter and the under hood filter so if you want a Motorcraft FCM filter youíll get the under hood one too. Iím not too concerned with warranty as Ford would likely blame something else like my S&B CAI or HSM OEM replacement intercooler pipe.

Hereís a picture of it installed in a 2011

Looks like a good mod but do we know if it filters as well
As the oem? We all know these things are very finicky about their clean fuel
