The truck doesn't "dump" DEF during a regeneration. It adds fuel to burn off the soot. the DEF is not related.

As someone previously said, "don't over think things" find a good additive, a good filling station and stick with it. Stay away from mixing your own snake oil potions in an attempt to head off problems. You're still under warranty, if something craps out, bring it back to the dealer...

Actually DEF is only injected when you have high combustion temps.
If you are just idling along and seeing 300 EGT temps No DEF is being injected.
You climb a grade, Tow a load. or just plain Punch it away from a taffic light, and Tubo pressure goes up and your EGT temps climb and DEF gets injected.

This is why some folks see 1000 miles per gallon of DEF and others see 600 miles per gallon

DEF is injected in the SCR (Selective Catalyst Reduction ) portion of your exhaust system.
Regen is done in the DPF ( Diesel Particulate Filter) portion of your exhaust.

Two different pollution devices that happen to reside in the cruise missile assembly under your truck

I'm newer to the new types of diesels, by everything Ive read is that DEF is used continuously while in motion. Some times more, others less but always injected.
Do you have more info on how Ford does it? I figures they were all the same.

You can learn more about the SCR in the 6.7L Coffee Table book on page 82 ( the version I have)

You have a NOx Sensor that talks to the PCM via the CAN2 bus. The PCM controls the DEF Dosing Module.
I don't see any discussion of what levels of NOx that trigger the Dosing. So maybe it does continuously and only the amount is variable,

My first Regen hit last night at 575 miles on the clock. While driving. I noticed the fuel economy taking a huge dive coming back from a date nite with my wife. Then I let it run until it was done. Could smell that funky smell folks describe along with a lot of heat out the pipe.

After it all was done, there was no noticeable decrease in DEF level. None.
