Is this ok????
I thought so! Hope your wife doesnt see this thread

Anyway, I think you're close enough on the pinion shim pack. You'll know for sure when you get the pinon set and the carrier reinstalled, and then check the backlash and contact pattern.

The wear on the pinion looks fine - especially for ~100K miles.

Keep up the good work!

Going down .002 on the pinion shim will shift your pattern a little. You will see when you check it. It will probably still be acceptable, but you'll have to be the judge of that.

looking at it now, wouldnt it be the other way arround?? add .002?

The top of the pinion looks like it is getting more ware than the bottom.

I think im going to take the bearing off and redo the shim pack. I can make a .030. And if im looking at things correctly the pinion would like that.... ?

I have always been told when reusing ring and pinion, you want to keep everything the same. The gears have "worn in" and if there is a change there will be excess wear.

Good write up, thank you, it takes a lot of time to stop and take pictures.

The original shim is fine. I would re-use it IMO.

I pulled the new bearing off of the pinion. I heated it up to 230*F and it came off.

So, all new bearings, crush washer, seas, and re-using pinion and ring gear.

The old shim is .028".

I can make a new shim pack of .0265" and a .030".

Should I put the old pinion shim back in? look at the picture of the old shim.

If your concerned about it, I would re-use the old shim. That way the mesh will be the exact same. I see no problem re-using shims. It's not like your trying to re-use oil seals or crush sleeves.
