03-e04 Air Filter Assembly vs later model; K&N

The truck I have has a K&N cold air intake on it. Personally, I'm not a fan of K&N and would prefer to switch back to OEM. So the question is - I see lots of >=L04 ones, but no 03-e04 ones out there (at least at the moment - I'm looking for used ones). Is there a difference or can I get away with a >=L04?

K&N fans - I'm sure these filters are awesome. I'm just not tough enough for one

Thanks

Some of the early air inlet tubes (filter to turbo) were one piece
Later ones were two pieces
As long as you get everything all the way to the turbo you should be fine

is anyone in the " know" a K&N fan ?

i have seen firsthand results and lab test that really show how crappy their washable cotton media filters are in most all applications

even pre oiled and new they can dust your motor

I don't have any leads on used. Only new, and S&B are the best priced.

If Ford did anything right it was using that Donaldson air filter for that truck. It can hold more dust/dirt and flow better than anything aftermarket.

I happen to know someone who has a 99% complete '04 setup, including an almost new filter. It's used & worn and I'm pretty sure there was one grommet that had to be used with the S&B intake along with the MAF/IAT sensor.

For what ever reason (most likely a severe lack of patience) I just couldn't get my stock air filter removed without the SOB just fighting me every time I needed to remove it. For that reason I purchased a used Banks air filter with the oiled media. it's worked great for 213K miles now. It's always clean as can be on the inside and the air inlet is always clean. I service it every 15K or so.

I have to check but I think I put my original 03 air cleaner setup in the rafters of the garage with my original exhaust system, both have less then 25k on them but havent looked at them in probably over 10 years. If you still havent found one let me know and I will get my son up there to check. I hated touching the original filter setup and went with a BRUTE FORCE cold air because it had a dry filter and oil can screw up MAF sensors quickly. Its been problem free so far.
