Barn Find!!

My buddy found a 2005 F-250 6.0 , A/T, 4WD with 56,000 miles on it. Older fella owned it and he can't drive any longer. Leather interior, body is solid.

He's already put rotors/pads all around, shocks, and changed the fuel filters.

You think it's worth $15K?

If it was easy everyone would do it!

I'd probably pay 15 for it, but I'd definitely try to talk him down, because I doubt it's been studded and such. 4 door? Got pics?

Crew Cab?
Long Bed/Short Bed?
Dual or single rear wheels?
Ever had a tuner?
Ever had engine work?
Maintenance records on oil and fuel filters (and type of oil)?
Still have the Gold coolant?
Stock air filter?
Stock exhaust?
Tires in good shape?
I assume it starts and runs?
How many engine hours on it?
How was it driven for 56k miles (towing, idling, etc).

Crew Cab, Short bed, SRW, I doubt it had a tuner. The guy that owned it went into a nursing home and he towed his fishing boat with it. Tires only have about 7K miles on them but they look too small compared to the stock tires on my 07.

Not sure on service records. I assume everything on it is stock.

If it was easy everyone would do it!

If everything I posted checks out, it may very well be worth it. That said, the 05's have the weak EGR cooler, and also the weak dummy plugs and standpipes. The turbo may very well be frozen (the variable inlet guide vanes on the exhaust wheel).

Also, anytime you buy a 6.0L, you need to look for signs of leaking head gaskets or a leaking EGR cooler. This is commonly evident (although not always) by signs of coolant spraying from the degas bottle cap. It will show up as "water spots" where the coolant minerals are left .... after the water and glycol evaporate.

Also, I would have a shop check out the fuel pressure - they can simulate WOT conditions for the fuel pump.

One thing is for sure from my perspective. Even if it seems like a good deal, I would be THOROUGH in checking it out.

$15k for 56k miles is a steal where I’m at. Especially if you’re in a rust free area. I’d plan to save the money to do a bulletproof in the next 50k, just to be safe if she does start spewing coolant. Definitely check out the turbo and fuel and oil, but I’d buy it and drive her (gentle at first) and work out the kinks as you go. If she’s been taken good care of and you continue to do so, she will take care of you.

In fire you can plan everything out to the minute, and a minute before that everything changes.
