I have 2006 6.0 with all the updates done and studded 70k ago. Starts and runs great drive it at highway speed 10miles and ipr will go to 85% and no start for about an hour. I also have oil in coolant that started at about the same time. Took it to dealer and they say oil in coolant is the cooler. They check both banks with valve cover off and said everything checked out good, pulled ipr and said it was good they are thinking it is the pump. I thought I had heard from several sources that pump failure on 05+ is very rare. What do you guys think
Are you monitoring your ECT/EOT deltas? If so, what are they? More than likely, oil in coolant is the oil cooler. As far as the HPOP, not sure there. With a compromised oil cooler, i'm not sure if they could still air test the HPO system for leaks before attacking the pump or not. I'd probably fix the oil cooler first, then before putting the turbo back on, correctly air test and do the pump if need be. Hopefully someone with more experience can chime in.
First, I'd ask if the dealer air tested it. Also, this sounds like the problem occurs when the engine is hot, so if the dealer did not let the truck warm up to operating EOT/ECT prior to the test, then there's a chance a cold engine could still hold pressure. It shouldn't be too hard for a dealer to do a pressure check through the ICP and use their IDS software to energize the IPR shut and the truck still be in the no start condition to show the leak.
If the dealer put a new oil pump on, chances are they'll change the STC fitting, and it maybe the STC fitting was all that was needed. If they heard a leak in the hot condition from the HPOP area, it could still be an STC fitting only, and not a new pump, but then you're at a while they have all those parts out, should I just spend money on parts only versus going back in again with all those shop hours.
More than likely the STC. Changing out the pump with the new STC is typical since you already have it out and it takes less time to swap out the complete unit. If you are doing it yourself, you could choose to do it as an either proposition.
