Already have a gremlin...

Hey guys, I have a little issue with the truck and I'm not even sure where to start looking. I've been driving about 150 miles round trip for the past couple weeks, and a couple times it would get jolty but I could never tell if it was the truck or if it was the road. It cleared up in 5-10 seconds so I always assumed the road. Today it was DEFINITELY the truck. When I say jolty, it's like a gas engine that's running out of gas right before it dies. Today it did this for about 10 minutes then it cleared up for a few seconds and then did it again.

I decided to get off the freeway and call a tow truck because last time this happened (a month ago), I blew up my 6.7 lol. I get off the freeway, truck is idling like crap, light turns green so I start to go and now the truck is running like normal. Has absolutely no issues so I decided to just drive it home and in that half hour there was no issue.

The only thing I know it needs is a battery but would that cause this issue? Looking at my SCT X4, my coolant temp always stayed between 195-200 and my oil is 5-7* above that. EGT's maintained below 800, trans temp was in the 160's, FICM voltage was 48.48.5, fuel pressure was and usually is between 59 and 61, and battery voltage bounces between 13 and 13.5.

I'm getting new batteries tomorrow just because it needs them (1 is good, the other says it needs charging but we charged it and the truck will still have a hard time starting if I leave a door open for 5 mins). Can I unplug both my batteries for a long period of time (about a day) without anything happening, or should I put the stock tune on and expect to have to re put in my radio stations?

Radio stations stick around a long time (mine stayed while I did my oil cooler) you will have to relearn the shift points and turbo I believe.

Have you checked the fuel filters, sounds like you may have a little air in the system but I'm guessing

A few thoughts/suggestions:

Read the codes and report.

A bad battery could cause all sorts of problems depending upon what "bad" means. It is good that you are doing that whether it is the cause of this problem or not.

You will not be able to get around resetting your radio settings if your batts are disconnected for any length of time. You will also likely get some codes related to the disconnection (KAM memorym etc.). They'll clear. You may want to roll back your tune on principle.

I'll wait on my diagnosis recommendations until after codes are posted. ...although checking connectors (FICM, IPR, etc) is always good for the soul.

Edited to add...

I lose the clock if I so much as look sternly in the direction of the batteries. I don't rely on the radio presets, but assumed they were toast, too. Now you have me wonderin'...

Fuel filters were done a few a days ago, I'll check to make sure they are still tight.

I'll run out and see if it has any stored codes, no CEL was thrown.

EDIT:
scanner shows a P0460 fuel level censor A circuit.

Well... that's a helluva code to have.

There is no Pinpoint Test for it in the PCED. The OBD system summary is this:

...which is - basically - saying that your sender is stuck. I don't know if that plays into your problem or not.

Even though the PCED doesn't define a test, it does say to go to the workshop manual section 4.13 for "diagnostic procedures." I'll attach that section. That code is not ever used but the description of the code appears.

When someone has hesitation, no cat, and no codes, I usually say that it's fuel or the IPR valve/wiring. You have a fuel code, so... even if it seems an odd code, you may want to look at what the manual has to say. I'll leave the IPR thought for backup.

Thanks for the PDF DJ, I'll take a look at it when I get up in the morning. When I got the truck the fuel gauge didn't like to work (went from a half tank to a full tank after shutting the truck off in a drive though) but it hasn't acted up since then.

Thanks zmann, my thought was to take both batteries out and take them to Ford so I didn't have to deal with a core charge but I guess I'll just deal with the core charge and do them 1 at a time.

Have you replaced the fuel pickup foot in the tank before, or do you remember how much fuel was in the tank when the problem occurred?

I'd drive it down there but I'm not sure if driving it is the best idea until I get this joltyness figured out lol.

My last fill up was a couple days ago so this would be 10 or so gallons in. I have never done anything to this truck, I just bought it a few weeks ago. I've done it on a few other trucks, not too difficult but I don't enjoy pulling the bed haha.
