Might be worth troubleshooting before you spend big bucks.

Yeah, I did but nothing showed up on the reader. I only happened going over the mountains.

But I want to get it done anyway, I like my vehicles to be trustworthy and hate taking risks I don't need to take. I'll be asking a lot from the truck so I want it to be in good shape.

The tranny is in great shape as is the 4 W drive system. I'm having the front end tightend up. Maybe I can arrange it to go to Mesa during Spring Training and watch some baseball while the truck is being worked on. That's an idea.

It could be as simple as a temperature sensor. Could be an EBP sensor or a sticking turbo. Could even be simply a dirty EGR valve.

A 15 degree differential trips it (for a given speed and load condition that lasts for a certain amount of time). So does an overboost. So does a FICM low voltage or even a vehicle low voltage.

OP - I am sure we could help you troubleshoot it, but it sounds like your mind is made up.

Agreed with @bismic . I think if you pulled the codes and posted them on here, along with your symptoms your having, we could help you out a bit, and probably save you some coin. I know the guys on here have saved me hundreds, if not thousands of $$'s in repairs and troubleshooting.
