Replaced alternator; Now no speedo, no power, ABS light on

So my alternator gave out a few weeks ago and I had to drive home (~20 miles) on battery power alone. I finally got around to swapping it out last night after charging the batteries - They were totally dead.

2005 F350 6.0 auto

Anyway, long story short -- The truck ran fine until the alternator went out. Now, the speedometer doesn't work (on the gauge cluster OR my Edge CTS). Consequently, the MPG display also does not work. My ABS light is on all the time and the truck is running very strangely. When driving normally and going full throttle the engine just doesn't respond. The engine builds boost but the engine doesn't make any power and the transmission doesn't seem to be downshifting.

I checked codes and am getting the P0500 VSS code. I checked the VSS in the rear end, cleaned it and reinstalled. No change. All fuses look good.

I'm fairly certain all of my problems are caused by the same problem, but I'm not sure what else to check. Like I said, the truck ran fine until the alternator died and the batteries went dead.

I've searched and it looks like either a bad VSS or a bad ABS module but I've also rear threads were people have replaced these items and the problem wasn't fixed. Any ideas? HELP!

Check your fuses you had to of grounded the power wire to alt while changing it.
Also are you sure you installed the proper alt. You can try unplugging the control plug to alt and then power up your truck and see if it resets. If it's the wrong alt it can cause problems in the panel.

If you still have your old alt lay it on intake so it's grounded and then wire it up to see if things go back to normal. I do know gas and diesel Alt use different control pins on the alt.

The alternator is a rebuilt alternator that was in the truck a number of years ago. I had it rebuilt last week. I did start the truck and run it with the alternator disconnected and the symptoms were still there.

Ficm is showing good voltage?
No other pending codes?

Re verify all cluster fuses and under the hood relays.

FICM voltage is ~47.5 V @ idle. Haven't tested under load.

All fuses/relays are good.

Have you checked the alternator output? What if the alternator bridge rectifier is kaputz and you're getting AC voltage?

you have a VSS issue
it will do all what your mention

and I can verify they run funky and low power when the vss isn't providing a speed signal

I haven't put a meter to it, but my CTS monitor is showing 12.5+V at idle and over 13V when cruising. I did disconnect the connections from the alternator and run the truck without it hooked up. The problem was identical (no power, ABS light, trans not shifting properly, no speedo).

I'll probably go that route next just to eliminate it as a variable -- Although it does seem strange that this occurred after the alternator died. Just hate to spend $$$$ just to test something.
