I work for a small company here in central OR. I am not getting rich, but I make 50K per year base and the OT adds up as I have been working 55-60 hrs/wk since October. They kick in 4% added to my 5% on 401K and are great folks to work for.

Forgot to mention that I have weekends and all major holidays off with pay...and if it matters, we are not union.

Union or not doesn't really bother me. I'm in a union now but they just bent us over and screwed us on our pension, hard! So their new plan ypu have to work until your 65 for a full pension which they drastically cut.

Unless you are IBEW or Longshore you can pretty much expect that to continue

Anyone in any field especially gov jobs (cops & firefighters) that are hoping on a funded pension had better be close to retirement. The odds of there being anything left 20 or 30 years from now are slim to none. They say there are 10K baby boomers retiring every day right now. At this rate SS and pensions will be broke in no time. Many cities are already broke you just won't hear it on the news because for the most part it was democrats bribing unions for votes with wild promises that nobody had any plans to pay for. Media doesn't cover that kind of stuff when they can trash Trump for a living. (I wonder why the news media folks are about as popular as smallpox)

I have never been able to wrap my head around why unions would back democrats when it completely goes against their own principal ideas of wanting more money on their contract negotiations. Dems=more socialistic/liberal ideas Reps=more capitalistic/conservative ideas. To me, if you are union, you want more money/better pay? Then turn around and want to vote people in that want to tax the chit out of you????

There is a natural tendency to think that no one else can do a particular job quite as well as you, or be as committed to doing as high a quality of work. The challenge is too as a manager learn skills that you did not have as essentially an employee. As a manager your ability to do the job is secondary to your ability to teach others how to do it well, and Inspire them to want to do it well. In many ways it's like being the general contractor building a house, you really shouldn't be in there cutting boards and pounding Nails, your job is to coordinate the various tree so that they are there at the right time, won't be in each other's way and that whatever they need completed before they do their task is completed so that they don't waste time at half to try to do extra work. When you make it easy to work for you your employees like working for you. I nearly have to laugh, I don't watch much TV but a couple weeks ago I was watching the bar rescue. There was this little middle forties Chinese lady who would sit at home and spy on her employees with the multiple TV cameras, almost like JMo. He ripped her a new a-hole about 3 sizes larger for that move. Strange thing, it was working about as well for the little Chinese gal as it didn't work out for Jmo either. as one of our other somewhat older more experienced gentleman, could he struck me as in many ways acting a very new rich. Particularly when it is a small company, making your well obvious to your employees and not finding ways for them to share in the profits of the company usually doesn't work well in my experience. I work for one company, and 5 or 10 years before I start it they had a little slow down in business. The company did have eight or 10 branches and the boss had numerous other major Investments, so it wasn't his only source of income. However he came and visited one of the branches, and told them how due to hard times he was going to have to cut their wages, and then that the same meeting he was bragging about the awesome. We just purchased, and how he was such a caterpillar engine fan that he had insisted on the yacht being real powered with Kat engines instead of the perfectly good Detroit that it had in it. That kind of money flaunt it when he was shorting his employees didn't sit well. I know guys that 20 years later are still bitter about that. On the other had somehow without even trying too much, my present boss seems to me this I really nice place to work. Little things like since a Christmas bonus is taxable here, our spouses get a Christmas gift card instead of us. Spouses are not employees and it is not a tax thing for them. On a few occasions where I have done something the wrong way and caused some loss to the company, he has been really decent about it. He could have throwing the book at him, but instead he made it clear, that I was not the first one to have done whatever it was but that would I kindly please not do that again. Generally speaking when I offer a suggestion or make a request it is at least considered and if it is remotely possible he tries to accommodate it.
This is pretty much to the "T" how I treat the girls in the office working for me. They both have young kids in alot of activities. To me, family is number ONE. As long as they give me an honest days work and everything that CAN be done during the normal business day is done by the end of the day, I let them have off as many days as they need so they can be at their kids ball games, gymnastics, whatever it is to be with their kids. They can already nearly run the show without me being there as long as I have plenty of inventory of parts that need shipped out. We are still growing a fair amount, and there are things I still HAVE to do myself, but that is just where we are at as a company. I still have a lot more to do, and slowly get a few more people hired in, but that will come with time as some more of the larger projects near completion.

You are correct, it's bassackwards
The whole notion of everyone being equal and receiving the same pay regardless of input is a Marxist idea. In other words, union leadership is married to communist principles just like demoncrats. I pretty sure most workers don't feel that way, and many don't follow politics so they vote the way the union tells them to.

I did a brake job on my neighbor's Jeep Cherokee today. 4 new rotors, pads and updated front calipers. Took it for a test drive and the L rear is dragging, my new rotor has a pretty shade of blue. I lubed the damn pins and flushed the black brake fluid out, no idea why it's hot. Not happy that I have to get back under it.
