7.3L engine computer person in San Jose CA?

I purchased a used 2000 Excursion, 4W drive, 7.3L. Drove about 50 miles with no issues. Now randomly the transmission won't find a gear during a shift and will just stay disengaged. The shop I took it to says the computer can't see the engine and that is strange because the engine shouldn't start if that is true.

I'm wondering if the previous owner had it chipped and then did something stupid when he went to sell it.

Hoping to find a resources that could evaluate and possible resolve computer issue, which may be related to transmission issue or not.

Any pointers to folks who are strong with the computer and electronics on the 7.3L would be greatly appreciated.

If I remember right - if one of the VSS sensors fails on those things, the transmission goes all wonky.

PCM might have a stored code from past "bad signals" if you weren't having problems reading it.

There's also fuses that control power to Trans, PCM, and such - under the hood, etc.
