VPN

Trying to setup a VPN using OpenVPN and a Netgear R7000 router. Seems straight forward, but OpenVPN shows error connecting, then sometimes connects and the loses the connection and retries.

Once it connects, the VPN connection is auto assigned an IP address, so it's not really working. WHAT DO I DO???

You will probably have better luck at DSLreports or HardOCP. The settings for individual routers can be different and is also influenced by intended use and security levels.

That being said you need to determine what you are trying to accomplish with the VPN. Typically you don't set it up at the router level unless you want your entire network exposed to the VPN. For instance connecting multiple branches of a business together with IPSEC. Most home uses are to connect one dedicated computer to a business or to use as a tunnel for internet traffic typically with PPTP. Within that you also have the option of specifying internet traffic to traverse the VPN or use your local connection for better speed.

Just to make sure I'm understanding your use case: Your are terminating your VPN at your router (i.e. , you are connecting to it with a machine that is running an OpenVPN client, correct).

Do you have the VPN setup to hand out routes (what does your default gateway show on the machine that is connected to it)? If the route is setup : can you ping whatever the default gateway is showing as? OpenVPN can be a royal PITA. I have an R7000 as well (running ddwrt kognac).

Finally got it working, sry.

Turned out, the newest version of OpenVPN wasn't working right. Downgraded to the previous one, and now it's good.
