Am looking at getting some oils to to a full change on my truck again when it hits 400k. What do you guys out in the transfer case? The stealership said the Motorcraft Mercon V works for our t-cases as well, but the bottle itself said not for t-cases. Last time I changed it, I used the Motorcraft XL-12 (just a little more expensive). After looking around, I also saw the Valvoline full synthetic t-case fluid and the bottle said it is good for XL12 applications. Anyone have experience with that?

For the 7.3 transfer case grab some dexmerc from Walmart. It’s just a hair under or over 2 quarts. Same transmission fluid too.

They don’t make Mercon anymore and dexmerc is closer to the original formula then mercon v so it’s what I’ve used the whole time with zero issues. I use 4x4 quite a bit on the winter and the t case has given me zero issues

Thanks. How do you know that Dexmerc (Valvoline, I take it) is closer to the original than Mercon V? Curious since Ford says about using the Mercon V for both my t-case and my six speed trans.

I'd get the XL-12 or the Valvoline personally, they're made just for T-cases. I put synthetic, (synchromesh if I remember right) in my 6 speed

Drove from Cincinnati to Myrtle Beach pulling a 12,000 pound fifth wheel, drive around for 2 weeks. Loaded up and heading home stop in Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg area everything was great got up sat morning to go into mountains. Got about 10 miles from camp truck starts surging, stalling mayor loping. Would always restart. Got back to town went to advanced they can’t scan so bought a cam sensor and fuel filter. Went back to camp and changed. Started and ran smooth. Next morning started acting up again (Sunday) nowhere to get scanned, sounded like fuel so bought a fuel pump on the way back to camp (running like crap) I stopped got out and unplugged the icp sensor engine tone changed smoothed out so I drove back to camp all was good but now the check engine light was on. Called advanced back and asked it I could return pump for icp sensor he said yes as long as it’s still sealed in bag. Drove back to advanced no issues changed sensor in parking lot plugged back in no light made it back to camp no issues. Now I can get home tomorrow to go back to work. Not ford parts but brand name. Not the way I wanted to spend my weekend.

May not be the way you wanted to spend your weekend, but you are pretty resourceful. Says a lot that you were able to do all that at a campsite...

Mercon V is just a different additive package than Dexron. There is a LubeGuard (green bottle) that converts Dexron to Mercon V. I've used the lubeguard in other Fords at the recommendation of my 40+ year friend / professional trans builder. If it works for him, it works for anyone.

When I researched that ford was telling people to use Mercon V in the 4r100s I read many had issues with original units shortly after using it. The new rebuilds were it having issues though. It seemed more often then not.

So I stuck with dexmerc and have been problem free. I would do some research for yourself though to see. It just seemed odd people had issues after using Mercon V so I stayed with the closest fluid to Mercon etc

Ok. Just was thinking if you had the same color as mine I'd offer the passenger side bottom to you. Thought it might save you a little cash as it is still in pretty good shape.
