My hypothesis for this is that the higher the level in the sump, the closer the surface of the oil is to the windage of the crankshaft. The windage whips the oil into froth, foam and vapor. This vapor is pulled off by the crankcase ventilation system and consumed in the combustion process. Hence the lower the oil level, the less vapor is produced by windage, and consumption is therefore reduced.

I've seen this behavior time and time again with Detroit 2-Stroke diesels in the yachts. If I wait for the level to get to the ADD mark (which is 1 gallon), they hardly use oil at all. If I add 2 quarts to get it to FULL, I add 2 quarts every day. I've seen similar behavior in my 99. It doesn't take long to get 1/2 way down the hash mark, but almost forever to get to the bottom of the marks.
I don't add oil until it reaches the bottom of the hash mark and I have the oem dipstick so it has the little "oil level at add mark indicates two quarts low". not 100% quoting but you know lol. Even after oil change I let it run for a couple of minutes and let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour before adding if any needed etc. I am usually right at 3 and 3/4 of a gallon to put me right at or a ****s hair lower then full. If I wait till 3500-4000 im right at the add line been that way since I bought her at 120k and every 5k oil change after. I changed little early at 149k to get the synthetic oil in before winter. I do appreciate the good info with the combustion process thought though.

Austen added some archoil ar9100 to his oil and he was totally blown away it stopped his oil consumption so I tried the same but no joy. I figured I may be a little more if any with introducing a 5w-40 synthetic in a 19 year old diesel but it doesn't bother me. Shes leak free and run sweet!

Took it over to the Feed station this AM to feed the beast. Diesel in my area is $4.09 + they limit the fill up to $75 so I have to run it twice to fill up all the way.

Funny Story:
Tuesday evening, on my way home from work, I had all my windows down let the wind blow through the cab. I pulled into a left turn lane. There was a car next to me going straight. The lady had all her windows down too. I could barely hear her music playing. All of a sudden, I hear a kids voice (guessing 3-5 yo) say, "Mom, that truck is really loud." She said, "Yes, it is!" Then proceeded to turn up the radio. Couldn't help but smile! Our lights turned green and off we went.

Looks nice! You forgot the fairlead though, you're going to tear that cable up if you winch at an angle
