Slight Thud

So I inherited a 2001 and am not sure what maintenance has been done over the years but it only has 108,000 miles on it. With that being said when going over decent sized bumps the front end makes a kind of thud sound. Also truck is a little bouncy when driving.

Could this be I need new shocks??

If so what brand do you suggest. Truck is not lifted.

factory stock shocks are bouncy even new ones. i put ford shocks on both my trucks recently and they bounce BUT the also give the smoothest ride. I have ridden in many ford superdutys over the years with all kinds of aftermarket shocks and i prefer the bouncy.

Sounds like sway bar link bushings. Common cause for that thud sound when turning or hitting small bump.
As for shocks, many have used Bilstein which I also switched to and really enjoyed the difference.

My 02 was making the same noise, sway bar links fixed it.

For the price of them I am just going to order some and replace them and see if that fixes the sound I hear. Are the Dorman brand OK??

Slight Thud

For whatever reason these trucks eat bushings. Im not a big fan of Dorman, especially wear n tear items like this. If not for me changing dynamics of front end,Id just go OEM, dealer/eBay/Rock auto.
I did a PMF shackle kit lift (2) so I tried their link/bushing kit. Slightly pricey but was impressed with overall design and ability to grease them. Been a couple years and still holding up.

For a thud i'd also be sure to check the lower shock bushings. They make a pretty good thud.

Wouldn't hurt to check the ball joints. Most of the time, they'll clunk when turning, but while you're checking stuff.....

Finally got around to checking the bushings and they look good do I didn't replace them at this time. As I was under there though the shocks look pretty old.
