The standard shifting on a stock 4r100 is 1-2-3-3 locked- 4th. Sometimes the converter will even lock in 2nd gear depending on load, speed and throttle input. If you converter isn't locking until 4th gear then either your tuning is messed up or something is wrong with the transmission. You can also install a lockup switch to lock the converter whenever you want in any gear.

That's not normal, mine locked in 3rd and so did the all of the other 4r100 trucks I have driven. Does the converter lock in 3rd if you turn overdrive off?

Iíve heard that Ford messed around with the tranny tuning throughout the years, so our trannies may shift a little differently. On my 2000 model, built in late 1999, when Iím driving normally it will go 1-2-3-4 lockup. It will lock the converter in 3rd on rare occasions, but I have to be in the pedal very hard, at least 75% throttle. Also it very rarely runs in 4th unlocked, but it will in rare occasions if Iím pulling around a turn around 40 mph.

I find this strategy extremely annoying. I think itís good for trans temps, but thatís about it. It is most annoying when trying to accelerate from a stop up hills while towing. The motor has plenty of power in 3rd gear, so locking out OD seems like a waste of rpm and fuel, but it doesnít usually have the power to jump straight to 4th lockup even when towing around 2-3,000 lbs.

Also, the speed limits where I live make it annoying. Most people like to drive about 35-40 mph through town, and the tranny doesnít know what gear it wants to be in. 3rd is too low but 4th lockup lugs it out pretty bad.

I definitely want something between 3rd and 4th lockup. My dads 7.3 van with the E4OD goes 1-2-3-4-lockup and is much better to drive and tow around town with
