Needing a new starter

The starter on my '02 7.3 gave up recently and I'm unsure which to go with. AZone shows two versions for it, one "Off Set Gear Reduction" and the other "Planetary Gear Reduction", and neither say they're high torque. I think the one on the truck now is the "Off Set" version, although it doesn't appear to be offset as much as the new ones are. Any recommendations or input?

Thanks, Bryan

Not sure with the 7.3s but I know that when it comes time to replace the starter on my 6.0 Im going to put a 6.4 starter on it. They say it will turn over and start faster. Like I said Im not sure how different your starter is from mine.

Thanks, but I'm not ready to put almost $350 into a starter when I can get one locally with a lifetime warranty for under $200. Besides that, I'm really considering getting rid of the truck and going back to a 1/2 ton gasser.

Regarding my question about high torque, are the offset types typically HT or could both be?
What does a HT starter sound like? If I do keep the truck, I sure don't want it sounding like my grandpa's '73 Plymouth Scamp Slant 6.....

Both the "offset" and "straight through" are gear reduction starters. Just happens that the "offset" starter has a higher hp rating.

The TYC planetary gear reduction on rock auto for $107 works great. Spins faster than stock.

I only see a TYC Offset Gear Reduction for it on RockAuto, and it's only 3.0 kw vs. 3.6 I'm finding elsewhere

I did not realize the starter changed from the late 99 to the 02 - 7.3. Mine has a 3 bolt mount. Maybe that is why they are offset. I have the TYC planetary and it works well.
